INTACT – Ignacio Film
9/29/19
“If you could hear the voice of God, would you want to keep it a secret?” This was the line
that impacted me the most in the movie, Ignacio de Loyola. For the past 13 years, I’ve been
fortunate to study in a Jesuit education. Within these years, there was a distinct emphasis on the
life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. It someway influenced how I viewed this film. The film was really
formidable in terms of showcasing the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and influencing my own
personal life. The film captured how Saint Ignatius fought evil to bring himself closer to God. The
film was able to show how Saint Ignatius of Loyola – a sinner and soldier – wanting to seek what
is right and serving the Lord. The film really delivered the idea of how Saint Ignatius lived a
wealthy and honorable life to a life of poverty. The film showed Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s
encounter with common people and sinners that made me feel his humanity. The film showed the
viewers how influential the spiritual exercises were to ignite the faith of Saint Ignatius to conquer
his problems. Not only was it effective to Saint Ignatius’ life but it was true to mine as well.
The film made me understand my life better. Reading God’s word, sincerely praying to
Him, or helping someone in need, makes me feel empowered and ready to take on whatever
temptations Satan might throw on my way. It was in these scenes that I realized that I, an Atenean,
can actually do and relate to. When we do these things, God is able to work in our lives in ways
we never thought possible, and that is something we should be happy about.
As I sat on my seat, dazzled by how the movie touched my life, I reflected back to the line
that struck me the most – “If you could hear the voice of God, would you want to keep it a secret?”
I certainly won’t keep it a secret since keeping a secret only happens when the person is afraid to
face its dangers and consequences. I am a person who isn’t afraid to face these dangers and
consequences since my Lord is a loving God and He will do anything to protect and keep me safe.
If you truly believe and trust this is in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your savior, affirming,
“Jesus is Lord”, you will be saved from all your problems and spend eternity with God in heaven.
The film made me realize that I’m just a creature made by a creator far more greater than me.

LAS 21: Case Application #3 – “Tasting Success”
9/29/19

4-22: Which decisions in the story could be considered unstructured problems? Structured
problems?
As stated in Chapter 4 of Robbins’ “Management Myths: Debunked” and the discussion in
class, unstructured problems are problems that are new or unusual and for which information is
ambiguous or incomplete.
Being new to a different type of business or industry is never an easy task. Management
and owners require good planning and the necessary preparation to succeed and stay long. Since
coke is new to the Orange Juice business, this can be considered as an unstructured problem.
According to the case, Coke’s executive and managers are focusing on ambitious, long term
growth for the company – doubling coke’s business by 2020. A big part of achieving this goal is
turning its simple Orange Juice business into a powerful global juice brand. Another unstructured
problem is the process of making orange juice. This is because it involves complicated models and
algorithms. As the Coke revenue analytic consultant stated, “Orange Juice is definitely one of the
most complex application of business analytics”. Mathematical modeling is needed to garner
enough supplies for production despite the possibility of weather catastrophes and other external
factors. The company needs to ensure that they must have the same freshness for all bottles
containing their products and that these oranges should provide enough quantity of juices to be
extracted. With this, the company needs algorithm and complex application of business analytics
for the mass production of Orange Juice.
As for structured problems, Robbins defined it as problems that are straight-forward,
familiar and easily-defined. These problems can be resolved easily through the presence of pre-
determined policies and procedures in a structured and step-by-step process set by the company.
One example of a structured problem present in the case is the Black Book Model. The
model contains a simple program that includes detailed data about the different flavors that make
up an orange and about customer preference. This data is needed in order to blend the different
batches to match a certain taste and consistency for specific batches of target consumers -
algorithm is key to making each batch of Orange Juice. Also, the goal of the decision maker is
clear and the problem is perceived as familiar. The company solves these problems in a
straightforward manner and employees are familiar with the processes in solving the different
types of problem by just following the instructions.

4-23: How does the Black Book help Coke’s manager and other employees in decision-making?
Since humans are not perfect, common to us is the perpetration of mistakes. This means
that human abilities are sometimes limited, inaccurate and inefficient. In order to be guided and
commit lesser mistakes, the use of technology is upheld and encouraged, most especially big data.
As for Coke, the company makes use of the Black Book Model, their version of big data,
in order for managers and employees to be guided during their decision-making process. By having
the Black Book, it greatly simplifies and helps in achieving a lesser margin of error in the decision-
making process of the managers and employees. The Black Book lays out the end goal to base
decisions off of. Other than that, it also helps them to blend batches of juices as well as tweak
recipes when external factors arise.
The black book contains different internal and external sources. Some of this includes
weather patterns for supervising the growing season, cropping yield and other cost pressures. All
these are vital and valuable for Coke since these can help in the planning, leading, organizing and
controlling aspects of an organization.

4-24: What does Coke’s big data have to do with its goal?
Coke’s top executives and managers main goal is to double up Coke’s business by the year
2020. One of the big parts in achieving the goal is to build up its simple orange juice business into
a powerful global juice brand. Asides from this, the management is also aware of their weaknesses
and possible hindrances due to the limited growing season and weather fluctuation.
One solution to tackle the problem is the making of their “Black Book Model” wherein
they analyze the possible consequences in different scenarios. The Book contains different
algorithms correlating the different flavors and the customer preferences. These algorithms
matches the date and consistency of the different batches to be made.
Through this, big data is necessary in order for the company’s goal seem to be more
achievable. Big data is quantifiable information that can be analyzed by highly sophisticated data
processing. This includes volume, velocity, and variety information that contributes to the decision
made in the decision-making process. Big data contributes in making wiser decisions with present
and reliable data. It can also serve as a guide to know if the company is on the right track to
achieving its goal.
