TRANSMISSION CLUTCH MODULATION OPERATION and TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE ee ‘-HURTED OMPONENTS NOTES TRANSMISSION CLUTCH MODULATION TRANSMISSION MODULATOR VALVE OPERATIGNAL DESCRIPTION Both directional clutch assemblies are contolled by inci resid vstens. The pressure tise at side "A of the regulator pools ce same ae that applying the cute: pistes Sugpsy at ats vt wr's-and modulator i imited by a flow limiting orifice. From this imited flow the regulator spool drains flow te the vert yon... scyulator spool restricts flow through the vent port to build clutch peessuro ata predetermined rate, Once the vent flow is shutoff, only minimal flow passes through the flow limiting orifice to make up for normal spool and clutch leakages. Pressure on either side of the arfce is virualy identical ond full regulated system pressure is applied at the clutch piston. \When forward ditection is selected the oil under pressure enters the port on the "A" side ofthe regulator spool. This passes through the quick release ball check. The pressure force on the spool ares shifts the spool to the right exposing the vent port. The time required to shift the regulator spoc! over to expose the vent port shows up as a pressure spike at the beginning of the pressure versus time chart “The movement ofthe regulator spools opposed by the regulator and accumulator springs. This provides an initia low pressure head of approximstely 20 pa [137.9 Kpallon the “A” side of the ¢po0l. This 20 psi [137.9 Kpal is represented as a horizontal line fon the pressure versus time chart immediately folowing the spike. Oil flows through the regulator spoo! orice due to a pressure imbalance, Pressure at the side “A” is constantly higher than side "8" as a result of the added force of the side “8” spring, “The pressute differentia of side “A” to side B” across the regulator spool cxfce gives @ controlled flow rate, This contolled flow establishes the time it takes to fil the accumulated cavity. {As the accumulator cavity is filled, the accumulator spool is forced against the accumulator springs. As the springs compress their force increases causing the hydraulic pressure in the accumulator cavity and "8 side ofthe regulator spool to increase. Pressure on the “A” side of the regulator spool increases with the opposing force on the “B” side, ‘This causes the rsing slope in the clutch pressure versus time chart. The rate ofthis rise is controlled by the accumulator spring force. Once the accumulator sp00! Is stroked to its limit, pressure on "A and "B” side ofthe regulator spool is balanced since ‘no low passes through the regulator spool orifice, The clutch and modulator pressure rapidly rise tothe system regulated clutch ‘supply pressure setting, This is the vertical line on the clutch pressure versus time char. “The entite modulator sequence of events occurs in ess than two seconds, The steady rise of clutch pressure increases the clutch dling torque which results in a smooth clutch application. ‘When forward diection is selected the reverse clutch and modulator are vented through the control valve to the transmission sump. The reverse accumulator cavity is vented back through the regulator spool oiiice and the quick release ball check. To hasten the reset time of the accumulator, immediately preparing the transmission for a directional shift, full system regulated clutch supply pressure ftom the forward control valve is directed to the spring cavity of the reverse accumulator. When reverse direction is selected the reverse clutch and modulator function through the same sequence of events as the forward clutch and modulator. ‘The lockup modulator system works on the same hydraulic pri plumbing diagram. ples. A-complete modulation circuit is provided for each clutch being modulated. Included are a diferent trsceue regulstor and spring loaded accumulator. Such a valve ecuit is shown schematicaly on page 6 2. All modulator circuits are in hydrualic parallel to clutch supply lines. They do not interrupt the ercuit st any {ime A flow limiting onfce is designed into each modulation valve assembly. Consequently conventions} regulated pressure ports, offen noted as clutch pressure ports no longer indicate actual clutch pressure for forward and reverse clutches, (See B 2 & 3 below 3. All current modulated transmission directional clutch pistons employ a fixed bleed orifice. Due to the com- Linston a clutch leakage, piston bleed office flow rate, and flow limited orifices, directional clutch pressure will be slightly lower than regulated pressure Pressure Gauge Ports 1. Refer to pages 7 & 8 for locations of ditectional clutch pressure chack ports 2. Note that the control valve forward and reverse check ports of 18000, 24000, 28000, 32000 & 34000 transmissions cannot be used to check actual clutch pressures of modulated units 4, The 1000 series transmission contol valve ports can be used to check directional clutch pressure Pro-Test Study 1. Proper transmission identification is requited prior to test. For example the 28000 transmission check out pro ccedutes are different for an R model and HR mode! 2. Modulated transmission charging pump size should be determined prior to test Clutch Pressure Study 1. Locate gauge ports for regulated, forward clutch, and reverse clutch pressures. A 400 PSI [2788.0 Kpal ‘gauge is recommended for use at these ports. 2. Warm system up to operating temperature (180 to 200° F [82.2 -93,3° Cl t converter outlet).
