History of the Roman Catholic Church in Itbayat

In 1853 Rev. Father Vicente Araujo O.P. the first resident missionary in Itbayat arrived and stayed for
five years.

In 1855 – It was the year when the missionary succeeded in unifying the seven ancient scattered villages
of Itbayat island into two communities the town at its present site and named it Sta. Maria de Mayan
and its satellite Raele.

This great privilege to be socially and politically recognized was because of the dedicated effort of
Father Vicente Araujo O.P.

Year 1872- Rev. Father Manuel Blasco O.P. undertook the building of the church. It was a combination of
European and Itbayat architecture. The church was built with stone lime, sand and other materials
available in the locality. No cement and reinforcement but it survived earthquake and strong typhoons.
It stood majestically through the years to date.

It has (7) seven lower windows, (2) two upper windows and (6) six doors with a length of approximately
(50) fifty meters and width of (16) sixteen meters. It has a free standing style cross.

In 1888 Rev. Father Manuel Blasco O.P blessed the new church.

Rev. Father Domingo Deniz O.P. arrived in 1967 and serve the people of this isolated island of itbayat for
(46) forty-six years.

1981 the cogon roof was changed into GI sheets donated by Madame Zobel a Spanish millionaire.

Another eye-catching structure is the belfry church steeple which survive natural calamities. It also
carried the weight of two large bells which is said to have very unique sound.

The construction and improvement both of the façade and interior of the church is the lasting legacy of
the people of Itbayat render the guidance of Father Domingo Deniz. O.P.

On July 27,2019 at 4:20 am a strong earthquake hit Itbayat, another stronger one came at 7:30am which
destroyed all lime stone houses, the churches, schools & municipal building that left (267) Two Hundred
Sixty Seven families homeless with (9) casualties. Remaining buildings are being inspected by the DPWH
engineers and recommend whether it is safe to reside or not. Such is a grave destruction but God has
surely a message for all of us. We hope and pray that we will understand God’s loving message to all of
us.
