Harihar-Dakshina kashi

Harihar a town located in the district of Davanagere in the state of

Karnataka. It is also known as “Hari-Hara” which means Lord Shiva and Lord
Vishnu. The speciality of this place is that this is one of the few temples
where both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshipped in a single temple.
The name Harihareshwara has got an interesting story. This place was
known as Guharanya in ancient days where the demon known as Guhasura
was living and this place was surrounded by full of forest. This demon had a
boon that he can’t be killed by Humans, God or Other Demons. He was
torturing the humans, god as well as other demons also. No one was able to
bare his tortures. So Vishnu and Shiva came together as Harihareshwara and
killed that Guhasura. That is how the place got the name called Harihara.

There is also a river flowing in this place called Tungabhadra. This river
flows towards east direction and joins Krishna in AP. From there it joins Bay
of Bengal. The interesting part about the river is that it is also a combination
of two rivers Thunga which starts from Western Ghats on a hill known as
Varaha Parvata and Bhadra which starts from Kuduremukh in Chikmagalur
district joins in a place called Koodli in Shimogga district.
