6.1 Product Architecture
Function of each component
1) Front wing
 Front wing and rear wing are two
different part which has different
functions. Front wing responsible for
directing airflow back towards the rest of
the car.
 To reduce air resistance through
the travel moving.
 Generates downforce to stabilize
the car
 To avoid the car collide with the
track walls which can slow the friction.

2) Rear wing
 Rear wing used to change the flow
of air over the rear of the car. This
change in air flow increases downforce
on the rear of the car.
 It also creates a Stylish Look to the
car.
 To make the car more
aerodynamic.

3) Tyre Support

 To provide a good streamline

moving through the tyre component.
 Mechanical component that pass on
torque and rotation with the aim of
connecting other part.
4) Body

 To reduce the drag force and make the car more aerodynamic to reduce
as much as possible the air friction that will slow down the car.
 To accelerate the flow of air under the car, creating an area of low
pressure, thus increasing downforce. Thus, make the car more stable.
6.2 Configuration Design
Process involved
We start to invest money to buy the materials for the car’s component which
is available at the shop. First, we find the main component of the mini formula
one car (F100) which is the body. We used a block of wood that we got as the
body of the car which is given by our lecturer. So, the material of the body can be
considered as free because we did not spend money to buy the block of wood.
Moreover, the money which has been collected, we went to the hardware shop to
buy another part and component of the car which is screw and spray. We used a
piece of large metal to make the rear wing and nose cone of the mini formula one
car (F100). This piece of metal can also be considered as free because it is taken
at the workshop only. We build this mini formula one car (F100) at the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering’s workshop which is provided more than enough machines
and tools for us to build the car. During the building of this mini formula one car
(F100), we have used some machines which is involved cutting process, drilling
process and milling process. The assemble process of the car include by using the
wood glue which is to stick the side wing with the body. Moreover, the screws are
used to assemble the front wing and the nose cone with the body of the car. The
rear wing is knock at the back of the car’s body. We put the wheels temporarily
at its place by using the cellotape and we are ready to test it on the 15 meters’
track.

Process involved to create F100 car.

a) Cutting process

Our main material used is wood. So, we used cutting band saw machine to
cut the wood according to our set dimension. By using this machine time
taken for use for cutting process will be shorter because this machine has
high speed vertical cutting tool and it make the wood easily to be cut and
we also do not have to use a lot of energy to cut like using hand saw. Next,
other than cutting wood, we cut the aluminium to make the wing of the car
by using shear cutter.

b) Milling Process

Milling is widely used in operation because of its versatility in producing

various shape of product. Milling is a machining operation in which workpart
is fed past a rotating cylindrical tool with multiple cutting edges. The
geometric form created by milling is a plane surface. Other work geometries
can be created either by means of the cutter path or the cutter shape. By
using this machine, we can set the thickness of our car according to our
dimension.

c) Drilling Process

This process is very important as it used to make a hole for our tyre shaft.
The machine we use is pillar drill machine. We use drill with size 7 diameter
that perfect for our screw to connect to the chassis of our car.

d) Finishing Process

To make our car surface smooth so the friction with the air will be reduced
we use sand paper and file. Sand paper to get rid of wood splinter and
grains. Sand paper is useful because the it doesn’t cost too much and easy
to handle. We use file to remove some sharp edge so the air flow will not
be disturbing and make the car more aerodynamic.

6.3 Parametric Design

As the mini formula one car (F100) is finish, we test it on the 15 meters’
track, we found out that the car undergo failure which is the car move slowly and
take a long time to reach the finishing line. When the car is testing for the first
time, there are some mistakes and error which is happened. The car cannot move
fast and the velocity of the F100 car is decrease. So, we change the position of
the front wing and put it at the front bottom of the car. So, the result is the car
move faster than before. Moreover, the car keeps hitting the track’s wall. So, we
take the recommendation to add the length of the front wing in order to avoid the
car keep moving from right to left and cannot moving straight. Sometimes, the
car is not moving in a straight direction, this is because of the size of diameter of
the shaft. To overcome the problem, we have to change the shaft with a larger
diameter which is can fit the hole of the wheels.

After all of the problems have been settled down by us, we start to do the
finishing process of our mini formula one car (F100). We have to smooth the
surface of the car by using the sandpaper. The surface of the mini formula one car
(F100) should be smooth in order to do the next step which is coloring the body
of the car. The black spray colors which is bought at the hardware shop is sprayed
at all the surface of the mini formula one car (F100). As the surface of the mini
formula one car (F100) is completely covered with the blue and white colors with
some strips, we do the final finishing. Before going to the competition day, we
prepared some advance components such as shaft and wheels which has high
potential to damage before the competition day.
