Summary of Week 1

Key messages for Week 1:

1. The world is facing a global AMR crisis. AMR is threatening not only our ability to treat
infectious diseases but also the entire practice of modern medicine
2. In clinical medicine, the overuse of antibiotics for common clinical syndromes has contributed
to the rapid emergence of bacterial resistance. Diagnostics are critical in guiding treatment to
reduce inappropriate use of antibiotics.

3. In health care settings, diagnostics are used in screening for resistant bacteria and monitoring
the effectiveness of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures to prevent the spread of
resistance

4. Diagnostic testing is the only way that we can gather data for AMR surveillance to monitor
resistance trends and be alerted to outbreaks. AMR surveillance data are needed for the
development of treatment guidelines and AMR control strategies.
Week 2

The role of diagnostics in the management of three common clinical

syndromes:

1. Respiratory infections
2. Urinary tract infections
3. Sepsis
