Research

Per Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary, it is a diligent and systematic investigation into a subject
in order to discover or revise facts, theories, application, etc.

As Pearson Education Inc. says, it is the system and process of collecting and analyzing
information to increase our understanding of the study

As Per Harry Shaw (1994) – it is a long theme usually two to six thousand words assigned in
most courses which require outside reading. Such paper is designed to be more than a report;
its purpose is to make a careful investigation of some subjects and to present and interpret the
source material in the light of researcher’s findings.

REMEMBER: Research starts with a problem to solve, with an ardent desire to answer.
Therefore, the moment you sense there is a serious problem to solve within your capacity, there
is a need for research.

Action Research is a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action.
The primary reason for engaging in action research is to assist the “actor” in improving and/or
refining his or her actions.
Selecting and evaluating a problem
1. It must be original and new.
2. It must bear relevance to the present needs or that of the society in furtherance of one’s
field of specialization
3. It should be measurable
4. It must be feasible.
5. It should be specific.
6. It must entail intellectual insight of idea that will pave way to the refinement of previously
discovered or expounded concepts.

What are the different parts of a research?

Customarily, Research has 5 chapters.
Chapter I – The Problem and its Background
Chapter II – Review of the Related Literature and Studies
Chapter III – Research Methodology
Chapter IV – Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data
Chapter V – Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

Evaluating Research Materials for Note Taking

1. Accuracy and dependability
2. Recency/ Updatedness
3. Authority
4. Scope
5. Treatment and Style
6. Arrangement
7. Illustrations, tables, diagrams
