Characterization of Olivia Pullman

The book Wonder, which was written by R. J. Palacio and published in 2012, is about
a boy called August Pullman who was born with a facial deformity and the things he
passed through.
Olivia Pullman is August’s sister and freshmen at Faulkner High School. She is a nice
and kind person. She cares about her brother who has a facial deformation. She
always tries to be with him and support him as much as she can. She is kind of sad
because of the situation of her brother but she never reveals that. She is the one who
takes August under protective care so she always tries to be strong. Even though
August is the one with facial deformity she also expects some attention. Sometimes
she’s frustrated that she’s been defined more as Auggie’s sister than as Olivia. She
sometimes thinks that no one cares about her. Her grandmother was caring about
her but she passed away so she feels alone. Since her best friend Miranda suddenly
has cut of communication with her she feels more alone. But then she meets with
Justin. She falls in love with him. Justin makes her feel valued and important. She
realizes that she can make new friends if she wants to. Her environment starts to
change. She is willing about new stuff so she decides to join the theater club of the
school with Justin. Even though Olivia is a nice person to August she is kind of
ashamed of him because she thinks that she’d be alienated because of the way he
looks like so she doesn’t tell anyone that she has a brother. Then one day Justin and
August meet each other and Justin tells Olivia that this isn’t something to be ashamed
of. And then in the day of the school play the female lead, which is Miranda, says
Olivia that she can’t play and Olivia has to play. Olivia goes to the stage and performs
the play enthrallingly. After that Miranda apologizes from Olivia and they become
friends again. From there it can be understood that Olivia is talented and forgiving
too.
To sum up we can say that Olivia is a caring sister who managed to overcome her
social problems and change her life in a good way.
