Clemence said Disney and Sony had reconciled for one more Spider Man movie starring
Tom Holland, after a very public falling-out that had suggested the superhero would no
longer appear in Marvel movies.
Clemence said the new film was slated for a 16 July, 2021 release, according to The
Hollywood Reporter
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, said he was thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the
MCU would continue and he and all of them at Marvel Studios were very excited that they
got to keep working on it.
Clemence said the news came as a complete reversal of a previous reported dispute between
Disney, which owns Marvel Entertainment and Sony, which owns the movie rights to
the Spider-Man character.
She said the partnership had resulted in two Spider- Man movies starring Tom
Holland, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
She said it also had enabled Holland´s Spider- Man to appear in other MCU films such as
Captain America: Civil War and the Avengers franchise.
She said despite that successful collaboration (both Spider- Man films had become valuable
box office blockbusters). Deadline had reported in August that Disney and Sony had failed
to reach a financial agreement, suggesting that the newly relaunched Spider- Man franchise
would come to an abrupt end. That had seemed all the more shocking as the news had come
the month following the release of Spider- Man: Far from Home, a box office hit that had in
that moment grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, it had ended on a cliffhanger, and had
suggested that Marvel’s Phase Four (was following up on the end of the Infinity Saga, which
had wrapped up with Avengers: Endgame) would heavily rely on Spider- Man.
Clemence said some Marvel fans had called for a Sony boycott after the news of the falling-
out had emerged. Holland, meanwhile, had said he´d had the “time of [his] life” playing the
superhero, adding: “Who knows what the future holds?”
Feige, in light of the new deal, said Spider- Man was a powerful icon and hero whose story
crossed all ages and audiences around the globe. And also said Spider- Man also happened
to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continued
to develop their own Spidey- verse we never knew what surprises the future might hold.
