A
HE Editor of this "Book of Litanies" desires to avail himself of
the opportunity afforded him, in issuing the Words with the Music,
to thank those persons who have contributed Litanies, those who have so
kindly helped him with much valuable advice and criticism in the preparation
of the Words, and those who have generously placed Litanies already

(p. 38), Saints' Days, and of the two on the Passion, for his permission to
insert them. His best acknowledgments are also due to the Rev. J. E. Field
for allowing him to use his translation of a Metrical Litany from the Mozarabic
suitable vehicle for the Words ; and the Editor, in addition to acknowledging
in the Index the authorship of the various Tunes, desires here to thank all
that they have taken in it, to the value of the Book. To Mr. W. S. Hoyte,
the Musical Editor, he would offer his best thanks for the skill and judgment
with which he has prepared the Music for the press, for his Tunes, as well as
for his harmonies to the foreign Airs ; to Mr. William James, Organist of

that he has bestowed upon the work that he has done for the Book; and to
the Rev. J. B. Dvkes, M.A., Mus. Doc, Vicar of St. Oswald's, Durham; the
Rev. H. H. Woodward, M.A., Mus. Bac. ; Dr. Stainer, M.A., the Organist

Messrs. Burns & Oates (for Tunes from the "Choir Manual").
This Book of Litanies is now issued, in the hope that it may be one

Seed of the woman, Whose promise of mercy That from the love of the world and its riches
Shining on man in the gloom of his fall, Thou wouldst preserve us and make us Thine own,
Holding us back from despair and damnation ;
Following Thee in Thy life of privation,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear we pray Thee, Good Lord.
us,
Thou Who didst save from the midst of the wicked That through Thy fasting and awful temptation
Noah Thy servant, who witnessed for Thee, We may be fed by the Word of our God,
Faithfully building the ark of salvation ;
Sober in food and restrained in enjoyment,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Thou Who, o'erthrowing the city of Sodom, Lamb without spot, everlastingly holy,
Lot by the hands of Thine Angels didst send Thou Who wast born of a Virgin most pure,
Safely away to the mountain of refuge ;
That Thou wouldst save us from all that defileth,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Thou Who hast taught us the love of the Father, Christ in one Body Who bindest Thy members,
Meeting with mercy the prodigal son Lover of all men, Whom all men must love,
Weary of sin and abased in confession ;
That Thou wouldst keep us from envy and hatred,
Hear us, zee pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Thou Who didst enter the house of Zaccheus, Thou Who wast silent when malice assailed Thee,
Blessing his faith and accepting his love, Meek and unmoved in the midst of Thy foes,
When with his riches he made restitution ; That we may never give way to our anger,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Thou Who hast willed that not any should perish, O by Thy days of unwearying labour,
But to repentance that all men should come, O by Thy watchings and prayers in the night,
Saved by the Blood of Thy precious Atonement That in Thy service we ne'er may be slothful,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Judge of the world, that before Thy tribunal Sins of the past which we fail to remember,
We may find mercy and pardon from Thee, Sins which in sorrow we meekly confess,
Judged by ourselves in our time of probation ;
That by Thy love they may all be forgiven,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. LIcar us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.

Sacrifice offered for all and for ever Jesu, led forth to the clamouring people,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Maddened by hatred Barabbas to choose,
Thee the most Holy and Just One rejectir g
Jesu, alone with the blood sweat upon Thee, Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Jesu, in agony bowed to the earth,
Crowned with the wreath of Thy virgin espousals,

Woven of thorns, with the blood-crimsoned points,
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Now with the crowns of Thy glory resplendent
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Jesu, betrayed by the kiss of the traitor,
Bound by the cords which Thy creatures entwined, Thou Who wast wounded to heal our transgressions,
Jesu, denied by Thy zealous Apostle, Jesu, a bone of Whom should not be broken,
Whom with a look Thou didst straightway recall, Jesu,Whose side was pierced through with a spear;
Moving him sweetly to tears and contrition Whence flowed the Blood and the Water of healing;
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.

Name of salvation that saves us from sin, Hear us, 70c pray Thee, Good Lord.
High over all things, the sweet Name of Jesus ;
Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord. Thou Whose long-suffering goodness was waiting
While our dull hearts were unmoved at Thy call
By Thy five Wounds, each a porch of Bethesda, That in repentance we may be forgiven,
Whither the impotent alway resort, Hear us, we pray Thee, Good Lord.
Finding their strength in the fountain of mercy ;
Hear us, we pray Tine, Good Load, That, being cleansed from our sins and trans-

Wilfully sinning away our salvation,
Kneeling before Thee in lowliest worship ;

Who didst bless Thy chosen band, Hear us, we beseech Thee.
Princes sent to every land, That Thy face we may not fear,
With the might of Thy right hand ; But Thy words of welcome dear,
Hear us, Holy Jesu, " Come, ye blessed," we may hear,
