Innovation in its modern meaning is "a new idea, creative
thoughts, new imaginations in form of device or
method".Innovation is often also viewed as the application of
better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated
needs, or existing market needs.Such innovation takes place
through the provision of more-effective products, processes,
services, technologies, or business models that are made
available to markets, governments and society. An innovation is
something original and more effective and, as a consequence,
new, that "breaks into" the market or society.Innovation is
related to, but not the same as, invention,as innovation is more
apt to involve the practical implementation of an invention (ie
new / improved ability) to make a meaningful impact in the
market or society, and not all innovations require an invention.
Innovation often[quantify] manifests itself via the engineering
process, when the problem being solved is of a technical or
scientific nature. The opposite of innovation is exnovation.

innovation is not just about having good ideas; it is about

managing new ideas, improving old ideas, understanding and
anticipating markets and technologies. According to
Brassington and Pettitt (2000), product innovation involves an
organisation breaking into totally new ground, where previous
consumer experience cannot be utilised. Product innovation is
a risky process as the organisation will have to overcome
ignorance, suspicion and scepticism. Brassington and Pettitt
(2000) believe that product innovation is normally a result of
technological breakthroughs.
innovation projects refer to those projects that are going to
innovate current systems or practices with newer things, or
generally speaking, bringing something newer to replace
existing ones within a given scope. For example, upgrade from
3G network to 4G network, or from 2G to 3G. The process is
bringing something newer, but they may be not "new" globally
(in the world).

However, innovative projects mean the projects that want to

bring something new (creative) to this world. For example,
develop a 5G or 6G network, which has not yet even on the
planet.

Why Innovative Projects is Important?

Traditional project management models have focused almost

exclusively on delivery of products and services—defined
deliverables with clear and measurable execution criteria. In
this context, opportunities for innovation generally center on
problem solving. For example, when facing a risk that must be
avoided or mitigated, a project manager must often generate
ideas, which add value (innovate) in order determine an
appropriate risk response and contingency plan.

Innovative projects focuses more on the creative side. It helps

to find and discover new and easy ways to solve existing
problems thus making our life more easy.
A good example of where organisations need to have product
innovation is in the car industry. The car industry’s challenge is
to meet the demand for more cars and comply with political
pressure for zero pollution transport.Innovation in the car
industry has become evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
Cars are nowadays commodities, chosen principally on price.
But people have lots to choose from within the price range they
can afford. Now the focus is on adding value using innovations
from information and communication technologies.

Innovative projects for students

● To make students confident enough to handle the day to

day issues.
● To develop the “Thinking Skill” of the students, especially
Creative Thinking Skills
● To train the students to be innovative in all their activities
● To prepare a project report on a socially relevant theme as
a solution to the existing issues

Is there room for creativity and innovation within project

management?

My goal is to explain the key ways that creativity and innovation

can be used to differentiate you as a project manager, advance
your career, increase your effectiveness, and transform you
into a project hero instead of merely a project manager!

Creativity and innovation are rare in the field of project

management. For example, if you look at an organization as a
whole, it is within IT that you are likely to find the most
structured, logical, and ‘left brained’ people. Then, if you
consider the entire IT department, my observation is that
project managers are frequently the most organized,
disciplined, and structured resources within IT. I like to call it
the left of the left brained population!

When and Where to be Creative in a project?

Communication. Communication is a huge part of project

management, and creativity can enhance your communication
and improve its effectiveness.

One way to be clear with communication is through the

effective use of colors, charts, and pictures to communicate
concepts visually.

Tools. Are you being creative with the tools you use for project
management? Are you still using the same basic project
management tools that you were using 5 or 10 years ago? Are
you stagnating? I would say, be creative—adapt or die! Do you
still listen to music on a Sony Walkman portable tape deck?

If I could make one recommendation for a tool to introduce into

your toolbox, it would be mind-mapping. This will instantly
improve your creative “street credibility.” A mind-mapping tool is
a great vehicle for creative activity, and is useful for such
project management situations as: meeting agendas, scope
planning, note taking, presentations, brainstorming, and
numerous other occasions.

Conclusion

Although creativity is a rare attribute for managing projects, it is

something that can be very beneficial to making you more
effective, more successful, and differentiating yourself from
others.

Avoid stagnation. Grow your career. Adapt or die! Be prepared

to be a unique and different project manager. Become a leader.
Become a project hero!
