Measurement Lesson Implementation

Title: Measurement

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Goals: To develop knowledge, understanding and skills related to non-standard measurement.

Content Objective: Students will be able to explore measuring with non-standard units of
measurement and be able to apply strategies for measuring.

Language Objective: Students will be able to explain what strategies they used, to measure with
several types of objects.

TEKS Standards:
I.7 A- Use measuring tools to measure the length of objects to reinforce the continuous nature of
linear measurement.
1.7B- Illustrate that the length of an object is the number of same-size units
1.7C- Measure the same object/ distance with units of two
1. 7D- Describe a length to the nearest whole unit

● Timeline
Introduction- (10-15 minutes)
Students will be given a brief lesson on how to properly measure objects using
non-standard measurement. We will then use the Measurement Rules Poster to have
students identify mistakes “we” made while measuring a pencil. This will serve as a
reminder to students on what measurement pitfalls to avoid while working on the
activities. Students are welcome and encouraged to refer to the poster at any time during
the following activities.
First Activity- How Tall am I? (5-10 minutes)
Students will use Easter egg poster to measure themselves. As a class, we will
count aloud each egg for each students height. This will support and ensure their
understanding on the concept of how to measure with a non-standard measurement tool.
The eggs will serve as the non-standard measurement tool for which they will measure
their heights. Once students are done measuring their heights, we will direct them to their
respective groups.

Group Activity- (Developmental Activities)

Once all students are in their stations (flower stops), we will pass out the materials
they will use at their stations. We will then explain what students are expected to do at
each flower stop. We will have a total of three different types of flower stops and we will
monitor and answer questions while students work on the activities. After they have
completed the task for their flower stop they will be asked to move clockwise to the next
flower stop, each flower stop is averaged to last 10-15 minutes. We will ensure students
remain on task and answer questions about the activities students may have while
students complete the activities.

● Flower Stop 1: Students will measure various spring related images

(measurement cards) using linking cubes and gummy worms (gummy worms will
be used if time permits). Along with the measurement cards, students will be
given laminated measurement records and dry erase markers.
● Flower Stop 2: Students will measure three different colored tape lines we place
on the ground, using printed feet (baby & giant). They will record their answers
using dry erase markers on the Baby Steps Giant Steps Worksheet, which will
also be laminated.
● Flower Stop 3: Students will be handed dry erase markers and another laminated
worksheet with different types of objects which will be measured using
marshmallows and goldfish crackers.

● Closing Activities
If time is permitted students will be given an individual assessment which will consist of
3 questions. These questions will require students to measure line segments of different
lengths using paper clips. This will be a quick review of the math lesson to ensure student
comprehension.
● Assessment Techniques
For the majority of our presentation we will conduct observational assessments. As
students work at their stations we will walk around to ensure that students are
understanding the material, correctly measuring the given objects, and answer any
questions students may have. If time permits, we will conduct another formative
assessment using the Paper Clip Measurement Worksheet. Students will turn in this
worksheet to ensure they understand how to properly measure objects.
