Chapter 1

Introduction

The presence of having a romantic relation towards the same sex have arose in
today’s generation. Showing admiration towards the person with the same sex seems to be
normal but having a romantic relationship with person with the same sex as yours may
sound strange to some. As the time passed by, the people are slowly accepting the LGBT
people but they’re still people has this hard partnership or acceptance specially those
people who are very conservative. Lot of same sex teenage relationships were looked down
on before and were not common, today many teens are in a same-sex relationship. This
critical to developing sexual and social identities. In this paper, readers will learn the ups
and downs of teenagers in a world of relationships and sexuality. Growing up in a home
with parents of the same sex is viewed on negative ways to a lot of people, but studies how
that a child is well adjusted to being raised under a roof with parents of the same sex roof.
Same-sex teenage relationship was not well perceived by many teens today are in that kind
of relationship seems that teens are exploring their sexuality. These teens experience the
bullying, bashing, and slurs of being in a same-sex relationship, because of their sexuality.
Ga bashing and gay bullying is verbal or physical abuse against a person who is perceived
by the aggressive to be gay, lesbian, or bisexual, including persons who are heterosexual or
of non-specific or unknown sexual orientation. Sexual slurs, most are inappropriate, are
thrown at them almost every day. The most common questions for this topic are: Born
interested or learned? Growing up interested in same sex because of parenting from two
same-sex parents? The largest ever study into same-sex parenting has shown that children
are well adjusted being raised by parents of the same sex.

Scope and Limitations

The study aims to know the insight of the people among the same sex relationship
of the teenagers in the community in Iligan City. Also, the study aims to acknowledge the
insights of the people in the society that becomes an issue where some of the people accept
the LBGT community while some didn’t. The researchers only cover the random teenagers
who have a relationship with the same gender and only limited to 20 respondents.

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study specifically, were beneficial and significant to the
following:

First, the result of this study helps individuals understand how important it is to
accept other people despite of the what gender they are to easily achieve peace and
freedom;

Second, the findings of this study can be used as a basis in resolving the on-going
judgement of the same sex relationship among teenager through the insights gathered in
conducted interview;

Lastly, the findings presented in the study provided the future researcher with the
necessary information and insights when they will need it if they conduct like this.

Theoretical Framework

In the study about the insights of the people about same sex relationships among
teenagers, the researcher used the functionalist theory of Daniel Katz; he proposed the theory of
attitudes. Daniel Katz also view that attitudes are determined by the functions they serve us.
There are 3 components of attitudes according to Daniel Katz: 1. Cognitive – it is our own
thoughts, beliefs and ideas about something. When a human being is the object of an attitude, the
cognitive component is frequently a stereotype, e.g. “welfare recipients are lazy”. 2. Affective –
feelings or emotions that something evokes, example of affective are fear, sympathy and hate
May dislike welfare recipients. 3. Conative or behavioral – tendency or disposition to act in
certain ways toward something. Might want to keep welfare recipients out of our neighborhood.
5

Emphasis is on the tendency to act, not the actual acting; what we intend and what we do may be
quite different.

An approved or unapproved reaction of the people towards on something or someone, are

found in someone’s beliefs, feelings and deliberated behavior. It is a social presentation about the
insights of the people towards LGBTQ Community. Daniel Katz distinguishes four types of
psychological functions that attitudes meet. Instrumental - we develop favorable attitudes
towards things that aid or reward us. We want to maximize rewards and minimize penalties.
Knowledge - attitudes provide meaningful, structured environment. In life we seek some degree
of order, clarity, and stability in our personal frame of reference. Attitudes help supply us with
standards of evaluation.

Because gay people inevitably differ in characteristics irrelevant to their category

membership. Heterosexuals with multiple contact experiences have increased opportunities for
observing such variation and consequently, individuating outgrow members. Such individuation
is likely to reduce intergroup prejudice. Close relationship with gay men or lesbians can provide
heterosexuals with intimate, personally relevant information about gay people. They are likely to
foster personalization of gay people, which helps to reduce prejudice. Discussions with a friend
or relative about the latter’s homosexuality can help to motivate the heterosexual person both to
maintain the relationship and to change his/her attitudes towards gay people generally. Through
this theory, the researchers can elaborate more about the attitudes of heterosexuality towards
homosexuality. The 3 components will be considered as a guide for the researchers to determine
the attitudes of the respondents.

Definition of Terms

1. LGBT- LGBTQ is the more commonly used term in the community; possibly because it is

more user friendly! You may also hear the terms “Queer Community” or “Rainbow

Community” used to describe LGBTQ2+ people. This initialism and the various terms are

always evolving so don’t try to memorize the list. The most important thing is to be

respectful and use the terms that people prefer.

2. Same sex relationship -A same-sex relationship is a relationship is a relationship between

two persons of the same sex and can take many forms, from romantic and sexual, to non-

romantic homosocial-close relationships.

3. Insight – the ability to understand people and situations in a very clear way.

4. Prejudices – an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion,

etc.

5. Sexuality – the sexual habits and desires of a person.

CHAPTER 2

J0REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Iligan City is a diverse society which is run by government officials. Despite of being a
diverse society, this institution whole-heartedly embraces other genders as well as their behavior,
the way how they inside the community. This does not only provide a wider variety of
environment among all the genders but also can provide an early deeper understanding of the
differences that each individual has and also it can provide a first-hand experience on embracing
the so-called differences. People of different genders share a positive outlook in building,
handling, and preserving same-sex relationship. Their impressions to their opposing gender are
quite positive and they are also not against of having same sex relationship with someone who
has different behavior than theirs. According to Jean M. Twenge (Ph. D), Information gathered
from 28,000 grown-ups somewhere on the range of 1989 and 2014 found that an ever-increasing
number of Americans addressed “YES” to this inquiry. Truth be told, amidst 2000s twice the
same number of U.S. grown-ups revealed having had something life one same sex accomplice in
their lifetime when contrasted amidst 1990s. The level of men who has engaged in sexual
relations with somewhere around one man ascended from 4.8% to 8.2%, and the level of ladies
who had intercourse with no less than one lady went from 3.6% to 8.7%. It is not important that
the Philippines should legalize same-sex relationship but rather what matter is that the LGBTQ
community is accepted and respected by the society. According to Theresa Pili – Nisperos “I
cannot and do not condemn guys and lesbians but the truth is I sympathize with them because
they cannot be blamed for growing up different, feeling attracted to the same sex. Although
falling in love and the need to be loved are things normal for everyone, including gays and
lesbians, it is my hope that they try instead to divert more of their affection and attention to a
higher form of love—and that is the love for humanity and love of God. I believe, thus, will they
find true happiness and a clear path to salvation.” This study on the paper explores the
relationship between the same sexes. It makes the argument that LGBT movement established it
in the political. The LGBT movement whereas bring about political change. Although churches
groups are up in protests and against it passage for they believed that God only made two sexes,
the male and the female.
8

People are being conservative in which the Bible tells us that God made man and woman;
no third sex. A person embraces the fact that God meant man for neither woman, not man for
another man nor woman for another woman. Hence, same sex union is considered an offense
against God. However, as stated by the congress, a bill to make a legal same-sex relationship has
been filed: House bill no. 3179, “AN ACT GOVERNING PROPERTY OWNERSHIP OF
COUPLES OF SAME SEX LIVING TOGETHER” introduced by Hon. Edcel B. Lagman
advocates the bill which stated according to section 5 which stated that “Both same sex partners
shall have the joint rights to the administration and enjoyment of the properties co-owned by
them. One of the same sex partners of administration in case of disagreement the same sex
partner who actually brought the property to the live-in relationship, either by purchase or any
mode of acquisition of ownership shall prevail and the other without prejudice to the right of the
other partner to seek recourse from the court.”

Everything you see right now came and develop from the history just like the LGBT
community. There are lot of books about the LGBT history that will show to the people that they
always engage of their identity as same-sex romantic or same sex relationship. Were they
seeking for acceptance and understanding of having this kind of relationship that has varied
throughout the centuries, but they will always be part of every culture anywhere in our country.
In the Western contemporary concept of homosexuality is relatively new. Their ideas about the
homosexuality and sexual orientation are date roughly from the late nineteenth century. This
concept of heterosexuality also presents this time, as a prior to it, some of the individual of what
they really are, or they are still confuse of their gender and feelings because they are confuse
why they attracted of their same gender. That’s why there are many ways to identify sexual or
sexual practices and why until now it still existing and some are now stood to fight and seek for
acceptance.

In the time of twentieth century, as we can see many of the Western societies is slowly
accepting the same sex relationship and understand those people who are in relationship with the
same gender and some of the country are rejected this kind of issue because they focused on the
bible which it can’t be accepted due to biblical interpretations but just only some of the country
not majority.
9

In the Modern Western concepts about gender Identity or Homosexuality found on having
various beliefs about sexuality, including: Multiple sexual orientations exist, People possess a
sexual orientation, Sexual orientation is a vital component of a person’s sense of self and Sexual
orientation dictates who a person desires to engage in relationship with. These are the beliefs
why that is cultural assumptions for everyone that are attracted to its opposite sex that’s why they
called heteronormativity. The term “homosexuality” itself originated with (Karl-Maria Kertbeny)
a German journalist, in an (1869) pamphlet that argued for the repeal of Prussian sodomy
laws. By contrasting “homosexual” and “heterosexual,” he hoped to make them equal terms,
rather than one being seen as a sexual deviation. The word entered the English language in 1892
in a translation of Psychopathia Sexualis, a work by Richard von Krafft-Ebing that attempted to
catalogue various forms of sexual behaviour. In the twentieth century, homosexuality was seen
by many as a psychiatric disorder, and was not removed from the American Psychiatric
Association’s diagnostic manual until 1986.
