TerulMalaska, Broxton Kalt, Angela Hooverdenna Ivins | Avera Lovato 9 Optimizing an Advertising Campaign Math 1010 Intermediate Algebra Group Project Background Information: Linear Programming is a technique used for optimization of a real-world situation. Examples of optimization include maximizing the number of items that can be manufactured or minimizing the cost of production. The equation that represents the quantity to be optimized is called the objective function, since the objective of the process is to optimize the value. In this project the objective is to maximize the number of people who will be reached by an advertising campaign. The objective is subject to limitations or constraints that are represented by inequalities Limitations on the number of items that can be produced, the number of hours that workers are available, and the amount of land a farmer has for erops are examples of constraints that can be represented using inequalities. Broadcasting an infinite number of advertisements is not a realistic goal. In this project one of the constraints will be based on an advertising budget. Graphing the system of inequalities based on the constraints provides a visual representation of the possible solutions to the problem. If the graph is a closed region, it can be shown that the values that optimize the objective function will occur at one of the "comers" of the region. The Problem: In this project your group will solve the following situation: A local business plans on advertising their new product by purchasing advertisements on the tadio and on TV. The business plans to purchase at least 60 total ads and they want to have at least three times as many TV ads as radio ads. Radio ads cost $20 each and TV ads cost $120 cach, ‘The advertising budget is $6460. It is estimated that each radio ad will be heard by 900 listeners and each TV ad will be seen by 4500 people. How many of each type of ad should be purchased to maximize the number of people who will be reached by the advertisements? ‘Modeling the Problei Let X be the number of radio ads that are purchased and Y be the number of TV ads. I. Write down a linear inequality for the total number of desired ads. x+y 2 bo 2. Write down a linear inequality for the cost of the ads. 20x + \20y = Hee 3. Recall that the business wants at least three times as many TV ads as radio ads. Write down a linear inequality that expresses this fact. y = 3x 4. There are two more constraints that must be met. These relate to the fact that there cannot be s negative numbers of advertisements. Write the two inequalities that model these constraints: a x =o y=o 5. Next, write down the function for the number of people that will be exposed to the advertisements. This is the Objective Function for the problem and is a function of both X and Y. P= %00x% + 4, S004 You now have five linear inequalities and an objective function. These together describe the situation. This combined set of inequalities and objective function make up what is known mathematically as a linear programming problem, Write all of the inequalities and the objective function together below. This is typically written as a list of constraints, with the objective function last. uw wena Aaverusing Campaign rroect 1 < 6460 10 ‘S 7. The shaded region in the above graph is called the feasible region. Any (x, y) point in the region corresponds to a possible number of radio and TV ads that will meet all the requirements of the problem, However, the values that will maximize the number of people exposed to the ads will ‘occur at one of the vertices or comers of the region, Your region should have three corners. Find the coordinates of these comers by solving the appropriate system of linear equations. To find which number of radio and TV ads will maximize the number of people who are exposed to the business advertisements, evaluate the objective function P for each of the vertices you found, Show your work. With this project and being in the math classes | have been in, | have learned that math is not only very helpful but is used more than | ever imagined it could be. It is literally used everywhere and in everyday life. Many changes and choices can/are based around budget, and when | think of budget household finances ad making sure my children are taken care of clearly come to ming first, but I also think of work and how it can have a massive effect on the choices that we make. This project has helped me see that there is not only one way to a solution, that math can help organize and strategies your budget, especially when | put the problems into the graph, but it also helped make the answers clear and easily understood. Ivins 1 Jennatvins §— 10Q Uy Math 1010 Sec 303 Laurie Paxton 30 September 2019 Reflection ao inear Programming is a technique used for optimization of real-world situations. The worldly example given to my group was to maximize the number of people who will be reached by an advertising campaign, Due to the constraint of our advertising budget of, $6,460, my group graphed a system of inequalities based on the budget, Our graphs provide a visual representation of possible quantities of advertisements we could broadeast without going over the budget. I believe that applying math to real world applications can be very benelicial in majority of fields of work. Some fields include, advertising, financing. and constr jon. Each field can use linear programming in some aspect such as widths of a basketball floor effecting a building size. Depending on the desired size of the basketball floor would aff 1 how much of your budget you should set aside for building the building around the court, My opinion of math being applied to every work field remains because this project gives further evidence to support my opinion through discovering the maximum number of individuals who will be reached by the advertisements. With the given estimate of 900 people hearing the radio ads and TV ads being seen by 4,500 people. we can know that we want more TV ads to maximize the number of people who will be reached through our advertisements. This is similar to knowing the desired dimensions of a basketball court, We know the building should be a certain amount wide and long. Next. we compared the number of ads desired to the budget we had. Similar to building a court, you should not plan to go over your budget. You want the amount you spend getting the job done to be equal to or less than the budget set. Next, with the Ivins 2 number of advertisements and feet, you cannot have a negative number because you cannot air (- x) advertisements neither can you build around (-a) feet. This is a logical way of thinking of how your signs in math matter. (0) is a number as is (-1) but, they do represent the lack of nothing. ‘Then, the equation that represents the quantity to be optimized is called the objective function, ince the objective of the process is to optimize value. We know the goal of people to be reached ‘comparable to the dimensions of the court. Depending on this information will help us analyze ‘our inequalities to determine which will fulfill our obj ive the most effectively, Once all equalities are graphed and shaded (techniques taught in section 4.4, “Inequalities in Two Variables”) we can see which vertices show the common area each equation has in common. ‘These vertices can be plugged into the objective function to give us the total number of TV, radio, and dimensior 1eeded to achieve maximum value. A common goal in all work fields is efficiency. By applying linear programming, this goal is reached. *," Kealt 1 Braxton Kalt \oo oO Professor Laurie Paxton Math 1010 Section 303 1B Reflective Writing No, I wouldn’t say this project changed the way I view math applied to the real world. Before we did this project, I was aware of how important math is in real life, Not only is it important for large projects such as advertising campaigns, creating buildings, ete., but it is also used on a smaller scale daily. Whether you’re attempting to find the best deals at the grocery store, cooking or baking, planning a trip, or just trying to manage your finances; math is crucial in almost every aspect of our lives. However, this project did give me some insight as to just how much math can go into some of the larger projects. It also surprised me how inequalities could be applied to marketing, and it was cool to see how the material that we've been learning in class is applied daily by professionals. I do think that people who aren't aware of the use of math in real life would be shocked to see just how much it’s used every day. If this project did not change the way you think, write how this project gave further evidence to support your existing opinion about applying math. Refer to specific parts of the project when you are writing your reflection. In reflecting about this project, my perception on Math has not changed. I find, Math is still difficult for me to understand, but I also know that Math is used in the real world daily, therefore, making it is an essential skill that is necessary to understand in life. For example, let’s say you want to purchase a home. You will need to first decide what your total budget is that you can afford towards the purchase of that home. You will then need to consider the amount you can afford to put down towards the purchase of that home, as well as understanding what the monthly cost of that home will be, keeping in mind your total budget. You will also need to consider any other acquired debt that needs to be paid off before purchasing that home. Furthermore, you will need to consider your other life expenses, and decide if all of them are necessary or will some of them prevent you from buying that home. By understanding the magnitude involved of Math concepts behind buying a home you will better understand which loan company to go with that will offer you the best deal based on your total budget to save you the most money in the long run. This is an example that backs up the evidence that Math is a useful skill to understand in the real-world concept that is based on a budget. Because you will go with the loan company that will offer you the lowest payment saving you the most money in the end to have purchased your home for the best value. For instance, when it comes to buying a home you'll need to look for great interest rates, get pre approved to see how much you can afford with your income, acquiring a mortgage, budget out bills on top of the mortgage, and plan for those expenses each month from there on out. Adulting is, hard, Math is hard. But with the knowledge of how to correctly budget these types of things, it will relieve | a lot of extra siress. 9130/19
