THE SIDES AND THE BOTTOM OF A SHIP. IT IS MADE UP OF FRAMES COVERED WITH PLATING.

 FRAME: THE FRAME MAY BE CONSIDERED THE SKELETON OF THE VESSEL. THE FRAME IS
COVERED WITH SHELL PLATINGS

 SHELL PLATING: IT’S THE SKIN OF A SHIP. THE SHELL PLATING IS THE OUTERMOST STRUCTURE
ON THE HULL OF A VESSEL. IT’S THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENT THAT RENDERS THE HULL
WATERTIGHT.

 BULKHEADS: THEY ARE VERTICAL WALLS INSTALLED ABEAM IN A VESSEL’S HULL. NOWADAYS
THIS TERM APPLIES TO ANY VERTICAL PANEL ABOARD A SHIP.

 DECKS: THEY CAN BE CONSIDERED THE FLOOR OF A SHIP. THEY DIVIDE THE SHIP
HORIZONTALLY.

 UPPER DECK: THIS DECK IS THE HIGHEST DECK THAT EXTENDS OVER THE ENTIRE SHIP FROM
BOW TO STERN.

 FORECASTLE DECK: THIS DECK IS LOCATED AT THE BOW OF THE VESSEL.

 POOP DECK: THIS DECK IS SITUATED AT THE STERN OF THE VESSEL.

 SUPERSTRUCTURE: IT IS THE PLACE WHERE THE PERMANENT HOUSING IS LOCATED. THE


SUPERSTRUCTURE IS AN UPWARD STRUCTURE ABOVE THE UPPER DECK.

 BOW: IT IS THE FOREMOST PART OF A SHIP

 STERN: IT IS THE REARMOST PART OF A SHIP

 STERNPOST: IT IS AN UPRIGHT STRUCTURAL ELEMENT THAT CONNECTS THE KEEL WITH THE
STERN.

 STEM: IT IS THE MOST FORWARD PART OF A VESSEL‘S BOW AND IS AN EXTENSION OF THE
KEEL ITSELF

 RUDDER: THE RUDDER IS A KEY ELEMENT IN THE MANOEUVRABILITY OF A VESSEL. THE


PROPULSION OF A SHIP DEPENDS ON ITS INTERACTION.

 BULBOUS BOW: IT IS A PROTRUDING BULB AT THE BOW THAT REDUCES THE FRICTION WITH
THE WATER AND INCREASES SPEED, RANGE, FUEL EFFICIENCY AND STABILITY.
