As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

- Identify different safety features that must be included to make the playground safe, write down in list form.
- Create ways these safety features can be incorporated into their playground design.
- Brainstorm how their playground design will benefit the school community

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

- Workbooks to glue worksheet in at end of lesson. o What safety features did you find last
lesson?
o Which aspects should you include in
your plan?
o How can you include them?
- Students will also have their research notes
from the last lesson to refresh their memories
on different safety features.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key

Questions):
In todays’ lesson, we’re going to continue
thinking about our playground designs.
We are going be brainstorming and planning the
safety side of our playgrounds to ensure they are
safe for all users.

I want you to start thinking back to the safety Worksheets

requirements you researched last week, then on
this worksheet, you will list the ones you think
you should include in your design.
What kinds of things do you think you would
need to include?
- Safety requirements discussed previously

The next part of the worksheet, you will need to

think of how you will incorporate these features
into your design, for example if you want a fence
around your playground, what will you use to
make it?

The final part of the worksheet, you will be

brainstorming how your playground can benefit
the school community, will it be open to the
public or just the school? Who will have access
to the playground?

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

Transition:
10:50 *Students gather back down on the mat with their *Students to glue in their
completed worksheets* worksheet into their workbooks*
Who can tell me what safety features they are
going to include in their designs?
*Students discuss*
Now how are you going to incorporate these
features in your design?
*Students discuss*
What about how your playground will benefit the
school community?
*Students discuss*
And why is it important that it benefits the
community?
*Students discuss*
11:00 Next week we will start to think about and design
the layout of our playgrounds, what parts of your
playground will you put where? So, I would like
you to start thinking about the different aspects of
fun you will incorporate into your playground.
11:00
Assessment:
Each objective will be assessed through the use
of the worksheet. Students will be assessed on
their ability to identify the required safety features
of a playground, incorporate these features and
brainstorming how their playground will benefit
the school community.
