National Foot Check Day

You may not think about them very often but your feet are very important!
Without them it would be impossible to stand, play sports, walk, or run. Second
grade is a very important year for foot growth and development, which is why
your feet will be checked by a podiatrist today.

What is a podiatrist (po-die-a-trist)? Simply put, a podiatrist is a foot doctor. A

podiatrist checks the health of your feet, toes, and bones of the foot and ankle.

Today during your foot check, the podiatrist will simply measure your foot to be
sure that it is growing appropriately for your age and height. He will also ask you
to spread your toes out as wide as you can to check that the bones in your feet
are working the way they should.

Don’t worry. Nothing will hurt at all and the foot check will just take about a
minute. If you have been having any pain in your feet lately, be sure to tell the
podiatrist before he gives you your foot check.

Get Ready!
Before the podiatrist visits your classroom, you must remove your shoes and
socks. Use the paper towel your teacher gives you to clean your feet, especially
between your toes. When you’re ready, sit with your bottom firmly in the chair
and put your feet up on your desk. Practice stretching out your toes as wide as
you can until the podiatrist enters your classroom.
