The way I interpret the meaning of the line, in context to the song, is that the protagonist is
feeling hopeless, invisible and disillusioned with conventional beliefs, work habits, school
problems, and shallow actions in general, as he observes that the folks around him behave like
"Stepford People," or go through the motions of life without engaging one another in
interconnectedness.
