FACT SHEET: Students with gunshot wounds

When Dr. Mercedes De Luna was doing her rounds on her graveyard shift, three men were rushed to the
emergency room bearing multiple gunshot wounds.

The ambulance arrived at approximately 4:35PM. As of 6PM. the patients are still receiving treatment.
They are students of the University of the Philippines Diliman. They were rushed to Capitol Medical
Center in Quezon City.

On the afternoon of October 20, 2019, Ricardo Joaquin Jr., Samuel John Acampado, and Dan Gabriel
Lucena were gunned down by masked gunmen riding a black, heavily-tinted SUV. The first two were
identified as members of the Kappa Upsilon Phi fraternity. Lucena is a student at the College of Arts and
Sciences.

The shooting happened in front of the college parking lot where the two members of Kappa Upsilon Phi.
According to witnesses, the students were in the AS Parking Lot when the culprits fired three successive
shots into their general vicinity while speeding along the Academic Oval.

Joaquin and Acampado sustained gunshots in their extremities and are receiving first aid at the
emergency room. Lucena was shot on the right rib and is currently in surgery. Dr. De Luna reported that
Lucena will require additional rehabilitation after surgery due to the fracturing of his right rib.

Security Officer Raffy Inosente, one of the guards in the College of Arts and Sciences, said that the
incident has been reported to the local precinct and an investigation will be done in coordination with
the university administration to find the culprits.

Some of the students interviewed at the scene of the crime suspect that the gunning might be
fraternity-related violence due to the recent incident where the Kappa Upsilon Phi fraternity’s online
group chats were leaked. Said leaks contained controversial statements about other fraternities
operating in the university.

In light of the mentioned leaks, student activist groups in the university have been calling on University
Chancellor Fernando Simbulan to act on increasing campus security and to sanction the involved
fraternities.
