Part C: Sustainability Cross Curriculum Priority

One of the key concepts of the cross-curriculum priority of sustainability is ‘participating

critically and acting creatively in determining a more sustainable way of living’ (ACARA), this goal directly

correlates with the intended outcome of the Compost for Change design brief. Students investigate the

effects of rubbish in landfills and research what the future would be like if we kept going with these

unsustainable practices. The next step is for students to investigate what composting is and how it is a

more sustainable way of living. Students learn about the benefits of composting from a sustainability

viewpoint including reduced landfill, reduced CO2 emissions and reduced water consumption. By

implementing composting bins, using the compost on the school veggie garden and educating the whole

school community on what can go in the composting bins, the whole school adopts a more sustainable

way of living.

This design brief best fits the Sustainable Development Goal 12 – responsible consumption and

production. This goal promotes resource and energy efficiency and focusses on reducing economic and

sustainable costs for future generations. The design brief aims to reduce waste at our school by

composting, therefore reducing the sustainable costs for future generations. During the project,

students gain a deeper understanding of the issue of waste and gain comprehensive knowledge and a

hands-on experience on how to live more sustainably.

By the end of the lesson plan, students will have the knowledge to lead the school into a more

sustainable future by educating others on the correct bins to use around the school and being the

leaders of change.
