The

main focus of this STEM project is to educate students on living things, specifically,
animals. In our world, every living thing depends on each other. This is why with threats
to such a balance in life, it is important to educate young people about ways in which
they can contribute to a sustainable future, through the teaching of the cross curricular
topic of sustainability. The teaching of animals links mainly to the first key ideal which
relates to sustaining life on earth. To do this, students must become aware of what is
required for various living things to survive, such as animal. For this reason, teaching
students about living things such as animals and what they need through hands on
experiences and models of enclosures to house particular animals seems imperative. This
idea also relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 – life on land,
which aims to conserve wildlife on the planet. Another link to the sustainability ideas in
the project is action towards a more sustainable future. This mainly focusses on caring
for the environment by implementing schemes and movements such as only using
recycling for making model projects. This also links to the Sustainable Development Goal
12 – Responsible consumption and production. This goal aims to inform citizens of
resource and energy efficiency, such as recycling materials, as is being done during the
STEM project. Both of these sustainability links and Sustainable Development Goals are
woven throughout the Zoo Enclosure STEM project to raise awareness in the students
about reducing waste and recycling materials as well as the importance of the survival for
all the animals of the world in order to maintain balance in the biosphere.
