Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Kahoot! makes learning fun and engaging by giving students a quiz in a game format. Kahoot! gives students a
competitive and challenging outlet. Kahoot! quizzes are more likely to keep student’s attention than a
traditional paper and pencil assessment. Kahoot! quizzes can be completed in other languages besides English
which could help support English language learners.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The Kahoot! game will occur after the students have learned the necessary material from the unit. Students
should have a good understanding about the three branches of government before the teacher does the
Kahoot! game. I would have the students fill out a graphic organizer showing the branches of government
before giving them the quiz. However, the quiz covers basic introductory information from the social studies
unit on the American government so the teacher could give quiz after the students have had a few lessons on
the topic, but before teaching more details about the government.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will open up the Kahoot website form their laptops. The students will log into the quiz by entering a
given pin number. The teacher will open up the quiz on her computer and have the quiz projected onto the
board in the front of the room. The teacher will start the quiz once all of the students have logged in.
Students will respond to questions from their computer. The questions are timed, but the teacher must click
before moving onto the next question.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
This Kahoot! will be used not only as a formative assessment for the teacher, but this Kahoot! can be used to
help students assess their own learning. The quiz will help students’ study for their final summative exam on
the United States government. If students were not able to see the correct answer, they would be unable to
learn from the quiz.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

The teacher should be able to use the quiz as a formative assessment. If the majority of the students answer
most of the questions correctly, then the teacher can infer that the students are understanding the material
and are ready to move on and learn more new information. If the students overall are unable to answer the
questions correctly, the teacher should go back and revisit the information with the whole class. If one
student seems to be missing many of the questions, the teacher knows that she needs to spend extra time
working with that student to help them learn and understand the content.

How will the data be used?

Students can use the feedback to learn. The students will not receive a grade for this Kahoot! However, the
teacher can use data from the quiz to access what her students know. If a large number of students miss a
certain question, the teacher knows she needs to go back and teach or explain the information again using a
new strategy. If just one student is missing a majority of the questions, the teacher can make a note that this
student likely needs extra help. The teacher could pull this student aside and given them individual instruction
during center time to increase their comprehension of the material. If the majority of the students are
answering the questions correctly, the teacher can infer that the students are understanding the material and
are ready to move on and learn more new content.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I have played Kahoot! games before as a student but I have never created my own Kahoot! as a teacher. I
have seen how much students seem to love the game so I was interested to see how the website works from
the teacher point of view. I was interested to see how much of the game that the teacher could customize. I
hope that students take time to really read the questions and try to answer correctly even though it is time. I

also hope they pay special attention to the correct answers. I would hope this would help them learn the
material and test them on what they have learned so far.

Reflective Practice:

Students can access their knowledge of the branches of the United States government. Students get instant
feedback so they can see what information they need to study more. Students might be motivated by Kahoot!
and want to do well on them to outscore their peers. This might encourage students to study more in
advance of the Kahoot!, which in turn helps them learn the material. All of this will help the students learn
the information before the final summative assessment.

The teacher could post the Kahoot! online and the students could quiz themselves at home. The teacher
could also post the link to the BrainPOP video on the branches of government and have students complete
the corresponding quiz and activities.

As aforementioned, students could create graphic organizers to show the branches of government and how
they are both different yet connected. Students could use a website such as Bubbl.us to create their charts.
