HII a NAT ST 83-001 APPLIED MODEL : All models TROUBLE-SHOOTING GUIDE POWER STEERING The trouble diagnosis charts that follow describe the following power steering trouble and their checks and corrections to be performed. Please make good use of the information in the charts in order to offer e@ speedier, better service. CONTENTS 1. HARD STEERING IN MAKING A COMPLETE ROTATION OF STEERING WHEEL ....... 2. NOISY OPERATION: HYDRAULIC NOISE . 3. NOISY OPERATION: WHIRR 4, NOISY OPERATION: GROAN OaaNn The Information inthis bulletin should not be interpreted es the bass for claims unles 0 designated. a Whenever you order spare parts, refer to the Spare Parts Bulletin, not to this Technical Bulletin. - b whi 1. HARD STEERING IN MAKING A COMPLETE ROTATION OF STEERING WHEEL Attention should be paid to the following condi- tions, because they can cause hard steering © Insufficient tire inflation. Tire size too large. Wheel offset too small Wheel spacer is not inserted. Vehicle is provided with special equipment that increases vehicle weight excessively. © Pump belt slacked. Flow chart Considerably greater steering effort is required than with power steering (Hard steering at low-speeds and com- plete rotation of the steering wheel). Check if starting power of pinion gear No Adjust with adjusting screw; replace rack is within specified value. gear if not adjustable. + Check if starting power of steering -——+| Recheck. @ column is within specified value. + Yes No End |____4} Replace column. ee f Check hydraulic pressure [if its 981 | kPa (9.8 bar, 10 ka/om?, 142 psi) or less with valve opened]. [Oil tem- perature is 50 to 60°C (122 to 140°F) with engine idling.] Yes No |____________4 Check piping for twists, crushes, ete. Check if pressure is at specified level with valve closed, + Repair or replace. [n= Yes Replace pump. ___4 Re-check. Check if pressure is at specified level when steering wheel is held in com- Pletely locked position with valve opened. End No Replace gear. -»| Re-check. +| End = ae 2. NOISY OPERATION : HYDRAURIC NOISE “6. Flow chart Hydraulic noises (hissing sound) This noise comes out when the Hissing is operating sound of relief steering wheel is turned all the way. valve, indicating no functional trouble. Yes Check if air is trapped in system. |} Change oil and bleed air from system. oo @ Re-check. | 4 End Note: This is a fluid noise that the gear valve makes and does not i ‘ate a sign of functional trouble. Further, frequent complete rotations of the steering wheel may cause an unusual noise, because the oil temperature rises too high. . JE SET . e 3. NOISY OPERATION : WHIRR Flow chart Whirr (during operation) | Condition unchanged Remove pump belt and check, Defects in parts other than power steering No noise Cloudy oil Check if air is trapped in oil. | "+1 Change oil and bleed air. Oil is normal Ss @ Check if piping is pressed against Yes vehicle body. —————> Repair. Replace pump, change oil, and bleed Pump is defective. | ——————> air. ‘Small whirr Note: Whirr during a complete rotation of the steering wheel is caused by hydraulic pulsation. This is inherently unavoidable to a certain degree, however, it presents no problem to the system’s e amiss JECHAIGAL BULLET ____.____.-y 4. NOISY OPERATION : GROAN Flow chart ‘Steering system constantly gives out whirr. Check if air is sucked in due to insuf- ficient oil. |v« Change oil; check and repair oil or air No leakage. ! e Yes Check if suction hose is damaged. | +] Repair or replace. —— Pump is malfunctioning. | +] Replace pump. No Recheck, |__| End | Note: This noise is produced also at low temperatures because the viscosity of the hydraulic oil increases. It does not indicate a problem with the power steering system. e
