INTERIM ASSESSMENT
FIRST SEMESTER: 2019/2020
UGBS 609: MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
[20 MARKS]

Background of the Task

This interim assessment is all about understanding the relevance and impact of Bring Your
Own Device (BYOD) Policy on firms’ performance. A BYOD policy must be created based
on the company’s requirements.
Research has shown that the BYOD policy is making significant inroads in the business world,
with about 75% of employees in high-growth markets such as Brazil and Russia and 44% in
developed markets already using their own technology at work1. Research is divided on
benefits. One survey shows around 95% of employees stating they use at least one personal
device for work. This policy is still at the infantile stage in Ghana.
The main focus of this task is to discover WHY the policy should be implemented, WHEN
should the policy be implemented, WHICH firm should implement the policy and HOW
should the policy be professionally implemented.

Task
1. Form a group of six (6) members.
2. The group is required to use a business firm as the case study for this task. In case there
is no one in your group working in any firm, the group members should decide to go
for any company of their choice (as the case company).
3. Download online materials on the policy and digest for more understanding of the
policy.
4. Interrogate your case company to find out if they have implemented the policy. After
that, the next step is to decide whether you intend to tackle:
a. Option #1 where your case firm have already implemented the policy OR
b. Option #2 where your case firm is aiming to implement policy.
5. Compile a report of not less than 15 pages (Excluding, front page, references and
appendices) with double spacing using Times New Roman.

6. The report should be printed and laminated for submission. The softcopy should also
be emailed to aowusu@ug.edu.gh. You are required to do plagiarism check of your
work. Plagiarism beyond 15% will be rejected.
7. Kindly indicate references where applicable.
8. You are finally required to demonstrate your work through PowerPoint Presentations
in Class. Date and time will be communicated to you in due course.

OPTION 1
1. Gather and analyze relevant Case data
on BYOD policy. Do this by
Interacting with key members of the
Case firm for the data.
2. Interrogate the data to find out how the
policy was implemented in the case
firm. Report any challenges or
constraints regarding the implemented
policy.
3. Recommend ways/approaches by
which the case firm can adopt to
improve the current implementation of
the policy.
4. Assess conclusions and make sense of
options to ground strategic choices on
the implementation of the policy.
5. Report and justify why the
implemented policy is important for the
case firm. Ensure anonymity of the
case firm in your report. You can use
Firm AB to represent the name of the
firm.
OPTION 2
1. Gather data, through any data gathering
approaches, to understand the case
firm’s IT strategies with regards to the
intention to implement the BYOD
policy.
2. Discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of the policy and develop
measures for its implementation in the
case firm.
3. Provide detailed background of the case
firm regarding their resources for
implementing the policy.
4. Develop and advice how BYOD policy
can be implemented in the case firm
irrespective of their intention to
implement the policy.
5. Report and justify why the
implementation of the policy is
important for the case firm. Ensure
anonymity of the case firm in your
report. You can use Firm AB to
represent the name of the firm.
