Simulation of the cyclic tests with the damage mechanics model

The current design code for seismic-resistant steel structures in Europe
lacks a toughness criterion at the upper shelf, with which the ability of
dissipation of the dissipative zone in buildings is better guaranteed. Seismic
activities can be concluded as Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue (ULCF). An
investigation on the failure of steel structures under ULCF with damage
mechanics models fosters the development of such a toughness-based
assessment. In the damage mechanics model applied for ULCF, cyclic
plasticity, effective strain concept for cyclic loading and damage evolution
are taken into account. This model, however, needs to be calibrated and Seo et al. 2016

validated with small scale cyclic tests.

The topic:

This work focuses on the calibration and validation of the proposed damage mechanics model with the steel
S690Q. A parameter calibration scheme for the model based on cyclic tests needs to be developed. The
calibrated parameters will be validated by Charpy tests.
