ABSTRACT:

This paper describes a new and improved method for determining

equivalent NaCl concentrations from chemical analyses given in terms of ions.

It functions equally well throughout the whole range of salt concentrations.

The empirical conductivity-concentration relationships of the

various pure salt solutions commonly found in formation waters are utilized

in developing multipliers which will convert a given ionic concentration to

an equivalent amount of NaCl. The fundamental considerations entering into

the development of this method are illustrated.

The basic differences between this method and the currently used

Dunl(ap and Variable Dunlap Multiplier methods are discussed.

The suitability of this method to a rapid and accurate graphical as

well as computer solution is illustrated by several examples.

For the wide range of concentrations and compositions encountered

by the many natural and synthetic formation water samples used in this study,

the equivalent NaCl concentrations obtained by this new method did not differ

by more than_+5% from the measured values.

Finally a comparison is made of equivalent NaCl concentrations obtained

by this new method and the methods currently used when the chemical analyses

are given in terms of ionic concentrations_
