What is a database?
A database is an electronic way of
arranging bits of information not too
dissimilar to arranging files in a filling cabinet.
The advantage of having an electronic
database is that it provides speedy access
to myriad of information on a given topic.
Database also have features that can
enable simultaneous subject searches in
addition to an advanced search interface.
How to start your search
There are several steps involved in developing and
executing a literature search.
Begin by composing a clear, well stated question.
Ambiguous
Questions will often lead to ambiguous search
results.
Write down your research topic .
Underline or circle the most important concepts,
these will be your search terms
Example Question: What is the relationship
between diabetes and obesity ?
The key words here are DIABETES and OBESITY .
Using a search strategy
The use of a Boolean phrase that includes AND/OR
will facilitate your search .
The use of controlled vocabularies or appropriate
thesauri is often required to turn individual
concepts into valid headings/sub-headings.
You can undertake a key word search if there are
no valid subject headings .
Remember to use truncation( if appropriate) , so
using the symbols ($,*,#)
Example: surg$ will retrieve: surgery, surgeon and
surgical.
