Teacher Spotlight - Mr. Werkheiser Kristen Martinez - 9 From March 4 to March 20 this year, Mr. Werkheis- er was covering for Mr. Zimmerman's classes while he recovered from his surgery. Mr. Werkheiser was a substitute for his homeroom, civics, honors civ- ics, and AP Comparative Government and Politics. He commonly substitutes for Mr. Zimmerman along with many other teachers, mainly teaching ninth grade students. He says this is his favorite grade to _ teach, but he added that it was the grade he mainly taught. The AP Comparative Government and Pol- itics class he is unable to grade or teach, as it re- quires a special certification so during the time Mr. Zimmerman was out, their class was an indepen- dent study period. Mr. Zimmerman would collect the papers that needed to be graded to do it himself. Mr. Werkheiser said he really enjoyed teaching, as he loves seeing the “I got it” moment on students’ faces. He became a teacher because of his love of passing knowledge on to future generations. He likes teaching history because when he went to school he liked learning history, so he wanted to share that with his students. In high school, Mr. Werkheiser went to Parkland High School and eventually graduated from Kutztown University with a degree in teaching. He has not found a permanent: teaching position at the moment, so he substitutes for other teachers when they are absent or sick. Mr. Werkheiser said that his worst experience while teaching was last year when he was substituted for Mr. Zimmerman for a month. During that time he had to teach the executive branch, which included a 200 point project on a cer- tain president the student was given. Three students all plagiarized their informa- tion off of each other, causing a large scandal that was not fun for any involved. Mr. Werkheiser is a very friendly and nice substitute teacher, so all students are very happy to have him cover for other teachers while they are out. He only substitutes at Ham- burg, mainly in the high school, but occasionally also subbing in at the middle school, He really likes the atmosphere Hamburg has, as the students are very cheerful in his Opinion.
