What is the RAW proprietary file format for this camera?

The optimal file format of this camera is an ORF, or Olympus RAW format. This file format is
a RAW image format that, seeing as it is a RAW image format, would render directly from
the camera sensor. This image format contains all necessary information to develop an
image into a viewable format, or into a suitable processing software like photoshop.

What issues is the photographer facing in being able to transfer

these images?
This photographer is facing multiple difficulties with transferring these images to the
National Geographic within his remote environment. The immediate difficulty that he is
facing is that he must transfer 50 high resolution images by email to the editor of the
national geographic. This is extremely problematic as he must send these high-resolution
images by email. The high-resolution images would be around 15Mb of storage in general,
and we assume that the email could only send about 10Mb of data per email. This proves to
be highly problematic when needing to send the images while retaining the high-definition
and shows that an alternative option must be taken when sending these emails with the
high-resolution images attached. The primary problem will be compressing the images while
retaining the data, as the internet speed is constant, and should be able to send a 10Mb
email within three seconds given it’s 3.7Mbp/s speed.

What does the photographer need to do to transfer these images,

while keeping them viable for the National Geographic?
The photographer will need to compress the images to an appropriate size to be able to
send the emails to the editor of the National Geographic. The photographer will have to
send the emails with the compressed images, but it is imperative that the photographer
compresses the images only to a certain extent and allows the data to still be shown as
much as possible, or else the images will not be published by the National Geographic. The
photographer must change the format of the image file from an ORF to a smaller file size
that can still express the overall data of the image, and he will most likely need to send
multiple emails attached with all the images. The process to format these images is shown
below. To compress the images, the photographer will need to compress the image to a .TIF
and ZIP it, then change the image to 1600 x 1600 pixels, the minimum required size for the
National Geographic, save it and then send it.

How to process the RAW image while still maintaining the highest
quality possible
Step 1 Step 1
Select a chosen ORF image to open (once
saved) into photoshop
Application Skills and Managing Data

Step 2 Step 2
Go to file and then export

Step 3 Step 3
Click on save image

Step 4 Step 4
Change the file extension to a .TIF

Step 5 Step 5
change the compression to ZIP
Application Skills and Managing Data

Step 6 Step 6
change the space to sRGB IEC61966-2.1

Step 7 Step 7
Change the width and height to 1600 pixels,
and change the resolution to 195 pixels/inch

Step 8 Step 8
Save to an appropriate location – file is ready to
send

This is a process that can be taken to compress the file down to a size that can be emailed,
while still retaining a high gloss photographic nature while still being compatible across
platforms. This way of compressing the image would only need to be repeated in multiple
emails to be sent to the national geographic, while still expressing almost the same amount
of data.

Comparison between file formats

Within these two images, there is not a stark contrast that has been created through the
compression of the original ORF file.

As we can see from these two images, there is a viewable difference between the
uncompressed and the compressed images at a very zoomed in stage, shown in the more
pixelated eye of the dog, the loss of color between the two files and the contrast between
the color, but at showing the picture in a normal stage, we can see the photo still seems
very high quality. This shows that if the photographer were to use this technique through
photoshop, he would be able to retain the high-resolution images while still being able to
send his images over to the editor of the National Geographic for publication in the next
issue of the magazine.
