There are a hundred things she has tried to chase away the things she won't
remember and that she can't even let herself think about because that's when the
birds scream and the worms crawl and somewhere in her mind it's always raining a
slow and endless drizzle.
You will hear that she has left the country, that there was a gift she wanted you
to have, but it is lost before it reaches you. Late one night the telephone will
sign, and a voice that might be hers will say something that you cannot interpret
before the connection crackles and is broken.
Several years later, from a taxi, you will see someone in a doorway who looks like
her, but she will be gone by the time you persuade the driver to stop. You will
never see her again.

On the fifth day, which was a Sunday, it rained very hard. I like it when it rains
hard. It sounds like white noise everywhere, which is like silence but not empty.

I went to bed and woke in the middle of the night thinking I heard someone cry,
thinking I myself was weeping, and I felt my face and it was dry.
Then I looked at the window and thought: Why, yes, it's just the rain, the rain,
always the rain, and turned over, sadder still, and fumbled about for my dripping
sleep and tried to slip it back on.

Are the days of winter sunshine just as sad for you, too? When it is misty, in the
evenings, and I am out walking by myself, it seems to me that the rain is falling
through my heart and causing it to crumble into ruins.

Love like rain, can nourish from above, drenching couples with a soaking joy. But
sometimes under the angry heat of life, love dries on the surface and must nourish
from below, tending to its roots keeping itself alive.

Suddenly this defeat.
This rain.
The blues gone gray
And the browns gone gray
And yellow
A terrible amber.
In the cold streets
Your warm body.
In whatever room
Your warm body.
Among all the people
Your absence
The people who are always
Not you.
