The Southwest Region
The Southwestern United States, also known as the American Southwest, Desert
Southwest, or simply The Southwest, is the informal name for a region of the western
United States. The Southwest region is made up of Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma
and Texas. Part of the Southwest region is along Gulf of Mexico.
Climate Details
The Southwest is very dry desert region and arid to semi-arid climate. In the Southwest
climate change may impact a variety of resources including water availability. Climate
models predict that over the next 100 years, the Southwest will become warmer and
even more arid. The aridity, warm temperatures, and clear skies of the Southwest
result from its geographic position.
Vegetation and Animals Details
Water was very hard to come by so it was used very carefully. There were not many
grazing animals, so instead farming was popular for food production. The geography
of the region is mainly made up by Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts, also
mountains, mesas, canyons. Vegetation of The Southwest generally includes various
types of saguaro cactus and invasive plants. Although cacti is thought to only grow in
Arizona and New Mexico.
Religion
In the Southwest region lived the most popular Indians as the Pueblo, Navajo, and
Apache tribes. Like most Indian religions, those of the Southwest Indians were
generally characterized by animism and shamanism. Today, Catholics, Protestants,
Mormons and other non-Mormon, non-Catholic Christians are the major percentage
religious residents in the region.
