INTRODUCTION

The word success was invariably interrelated to the word ‘fame’ and ‘wealth’. Nowadays, people are
busy collecting material things and money because this is how they delineate success as well as the
society. Most people are drowned in the belief that a successful life is measured by money without even
heeding that through this belief, they are placing their lives to danger, the danger of overwhelming
success.
Many lose their values of life as they climb the ladder of success. God is always interested in your
success in life. But He is not interested in your losing health and family (Capps, 1982). People today want
to be successful, they are spending more of their time to their career rather than to their family. Its
tendency is to disconnect their family or to have a gap. Successful persons experience stress on regards
to what they have. It greatly affect their psychological is not good to their health. Furthermore,
successful person bring danger not only to their family but also to their security. According to George
Bernard, money is the root of all evil. Therefore, successful persons captivate criminal attention.
Nowadays, people think that if they have money, they are powerful, popular and people will praise and
idolize them. People think that if they have money, the society will give importance and value them
because of their economic status and popularity. In contrast, the importance of an individual is not
measured by their popularity, money, and properties.
An individual always looked at the positive aspects of success and they forgot its negative consequences.
Money is important to this society. However, not all things can not buy by money like love, health,
security, a good relationship to family and to other people. There are things that is more important than
money but the power to decide what is important is still on individual’s preference.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The researcher observed that all people want to succeed because they found it as the thing that would
bring happiness to them. An individual always look and define success on its positive sides and did not
even heed that success also has negative consequences.
Nowadays, most books tackle only the ways to be successful and not including the trouble and harm
that it can bring. It is important that people know the negative effects of being successful and not only
the pleasure that it bring. Poor wants to become rich and rich does not want to become poor, all people
want luxury. People today drown in the belief that having money, popularity and properties will attain
happiness. However, happiness is not only because of money because happiness is attain because of the
priceless things around us. A priceless things like family, friends, health and peace of mind is the true
happiness that can not compared and substitute by money and other material things.
The negative consequences of success is the thing that captured the researcher’s interest because of her
desire to attain success. She want to know more the consequences that success brings that is why the
researcher cope up and arrived in this topic.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This paper entitled “Success has Negative Effects to an Individual” aims to give facts about the
disadvantages of being successful. This paper wants to define why it is important to be satisfied in what
we have and why it is important to important to limit ourselves from to much obsession regarding on
the desire to have luxury. Its also cover the effects of success to our relationship with others and its
effects to the psychogical behavior of an individual. Furthermore, this paper will also tackle the true
meaning of a successful life and the true meaning of true happiness as well. This paper will also
encourage an individual to live simply and not by luxury in order to avoid the conflict that success brings.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Success is a result of an individual hard work. An individual is considered successful if he/she achieved
wealth, respect and fame.
Most people are definite to the definition of success. Mankind is drown in the belief that you are
successful, you are comfortable for everyday. An individual adopt this belief in the society that they are
all belong, in books, television shows and their hardship in order to survive for their daily lives. The facts
that have gathered from this study will be used to show that success does not only bring positive effects
but negative effects as well. In addition, it is hoped that this study will be the beginning of the realization
of how important it is to be definite to the things that we all want to attain. This study scoped the
negative consequences of success and its limitation is it, can not define why most people today want to
succeed.
It is important that if people want to attain the things that they want, they do not only know its positive
effects but also its negative effects as well.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to Merriam Webster, success is the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame and it
is the correct or desired result of an attempt. Most people want to succeed, they considered it as their
primary goal but they do not even know that it has negative consequences.
We live in a “Success Culture.” Many people pursue success as their primary goal in life and are often
obsessed with it. They judge their entire lives on weather or not they’re a success. They secretly attack
themselves for not being successful enough. But how much success is enough? People crave success
because they hope it will deliver salvation from the ego’s self attack (Holden, 2008). Success has been a
part of an individual culture. It has been considered as the primary goal of most people and they are
thinking about it so much. If an individual is not on success, he/she is blaming herself/himself for not
having it and to surpass this, they desire to have success because they thin that this will save them from
their egotism. We live in a world of words (Maxwell, 1993. The society has always a description for
everything. In the name of success more of us are working harder than ever. In an effort to keep going
we routinely sacrifice our relationships, neglect our families, forfeit old friendship, and alternate
ourselves from our communities. We promise that in the future it will be different. But the future is a
long way off. In the meantime, we struggle on alone. Increasingly, we ask ourselves, “Is this really
success?” (Holden, 2008). For the sake of success, most people may sacrifice important people in their
lives. They are willing to do anything to succeed but in the later part, they realize that even if they have
money they are not happy because they lose important things in achieving it. We may say family comes
first, but in practice work comes first, work comes second, and work comes third (Holden, 2008). It has
been a part of someone’s life to spend more of his/her time to his/her career rather than to his/her
family just to earn money. The dinner table used to be where the family gathered for the evening meal.
After the dishes were cleared, it become the place to do homework. Later in the evening it might hold a
serving project, or the monthly bills. With our busy lives, the dinner table is now a dumping place for
unopened mail and stray items. With everyone’s conflicting schedule, it’s open impossible to gather
everyone for a family dinner (Gauding, 2004). In the new generation, eating together with the family
becomes hard to happen because of being busy. Unlike in the previous years where in eating together
with the family is important and valued. According to Charles Dickens, a novelist, electric
communication will never be a substitute for the face of someone. Nowadays, there are a lot of families
who talk to each other through electric communication because of their busy schedules. However, it is
not enough to feel the presence of each other. Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have,
and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful let other people spend it for you. Do not
waste your time to temporary things, spend it to the real treasure that you have. Money can’t buy
friends, but it can get you a better class of enemy. That that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare,
and into my foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of
money is the root of all evil (1Tim. 6:9, 10). It is the love of money that is the root of all evil but there are
people who commit that sin and fall into temptation. You won’t need money up there. You need it here
on the earth. When you get to heaven, there will be no nothing to buy, no demons to cast out, no sick to
heal (Capps, 1982). People do not need to have an endless money because the time will come that they
will not need it as much as they think. The material financial of your life can generate a lot of stress.
Working very hard to make money to buy possessions, shopping for possessions and then managing
them takes a huge toll on your energy. (Gauding, 2004). Success brings stress. Most people work hard in
order to buy what they want. To lessen this, they must have a contentment. Many lose their values of
life as they climb the ladder of success. God is always interested in your life. But he is not interested in
your losing health and family to become rich (Capps, 1982). A successful person often sacrifice her
health for the sake of accomplishment. He/she sleeps late at night because of work that greatly affects
and harmful to his/her health. It is harmful because stress and pack of sleep attack our immune system.
A healthy body is better than a hundred other blessings (Torrenueva, 2004). A good health is one of the
most important things to an individual. If an individual has money but also has sickness, his/her money
will be lost soon. That is why, it is really important to take care our health and an individual must give
importance to it. Success is not greedy, as people think, but insignificant. That’s why it satisfies nobody.
Our priorities are dictated by our values. More significant things in life need to be placed as top
priorities. Being a top priorities means consciously investing more time and resources for them (Roldan,
2003). Better to eat vegetables with people you love than to eat the finest meat where there is hate
(Girao, 2002). You have reached the pinnacle of success as soon as you become uninterested in money,
compliments, or publicity (Boquiren, 1995). Enjoyment comes from inside. It’s an approach to life that
requires a light touch, the ability to bask the sensual and the capacity to let go. It doesn’t require money
(Gauding, 2004). The happiness is in right relationship, not in the abundance of material possessions
(Girao, 2002).
As what have been said by Socrates, contentment is natural wealth and luxury is artificial. Success
requires change and change has both positive and negative consequences (Pavlina, 2004)

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Success has negative effects to an individual when it comes to family, psychological, health and safety. A
successful person has less time to his/her family, less time to sleep, stress and captivates criminal
attention. Success can cause happiness but we can not avoid the trouble it brings. The major factors of
this negative things are their busy schedule, properties and fame. If an individual is successful, he/she
have money but he/she can not buy things like family, health, peace of mind and security. A successful
person is busy to the management of the things that he/she has, especially in his/her work. Its tendency
is for him to spend more of his/her time to work rather than to his/her family that resulted to be their
relationship to have a gap. If a successful person is busy to his/her work, he/she experiences stress and
he/she sleep late at night because he/she has a lot of things to do that greatly affects his/her health. The
security of a successful person is also in harm because criminals are interested to those people who
have money rather than to those people who have financial problem.

CONCLUSION

This research entitled “Success has Negative Effects to an Individual” is an unaccustomed matter today
because most of the books talk over on the positive things about success and the steps to attain it.
However, the researcher gathered facts in order to prove the said topic.
Success doesn’t only has a positive effects but a negative effects as well. It has been gathered that
success cause war and it is the root of all evil (Bernard, 1893). A successful life person sacrifice his/her
family, friend or other people for the sake of success (Life optimizer, 2006). Furthermore, a successful
person also suffer to stress on regards to his/her properties. Through this, the researcher concluded that
it is important to be definite to what we want because obsession can resulted to lose something special
in an individual’s life such as family, health, security, peace of mind, etc.God doesn’t required an
individual to have a lot of money that is why people need to be contented.
The researcher therefore concluded that success requires change and change has both positive and
negative consequences (Pavlina, 2004)

RECOMENDATION
On the facts that the researcher had been gathered, it is recommended to live simply and not by luxury.
Money satisfies nobody that is why contentment is a must. An individual must know how to balance
his/her time between career, family, and to his/her relaxation.
