National holidays of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small country, but there lives three nations, each representing
three major religions. So, there is conclusion that there is lot of religious holidays
celebrated in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I will start with Muslim holidays – Ramadan
Bayram, Kurban Bayram and Hijre's New Year, but dates of these holidays are different
each year. Specificity for Ramadan Bayram is fast which means that people, both women
and men aren't allowed to eat or drink from sunrise till sunset. The meal after finishing the
fast is called iftar. For Kurban Bayram, each family kill an animal – cow or sheep and then
share 1/3 of the meat with family, 1/3 with friends and 1/3 donates to the poor people.

When it comes to Catholic and Orthodox holidays, there are: Christmas on 25th of
December/07th of January preceded by Christmas Eve, Easter in April, Assumption, All
Saint's Day etc. These holidays are about spending time with your family, going to the
church, to give..

Two holidays that are important for Bosnia and Herzegovina is Independence day and
Statehood day. The Independence day is celebrated on 1st of March and represents
indenpendence of Bosnia and Herzegovina from Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The Independence Referendum was held between 29th of February and 1st of march in
1992 and Bosnia and Herzegovina was recognized as an independent state by the
European Community on 7th of April in 1992. The Statehood day is celebrated on 25th of
October and on this day in 1943, the Anti-Fascist Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina
(ZAVNOBiH) adopted a resolution declaring Bosnia and Herzegovina an equal community of
Serbs, Muslims and Croats.

One untypical holiday is celebrated every 21st of March in my hometown Zenica and that
holiday is called Čimburijada. It is symbolic celebration of the first day of spring. People get
together and make eggs, a lot of them and then eat together.

International holidays such as Labour day on 1st of May or International Women Day on
8th of March are also celebrated in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Traditional celebrating of
Labour day includes barbecue and lamb on the spit.
