Critical Analysis of Short Story entitled “Oliver Twist”

As readers, we want to analyze short story entitled “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens. It is
popular story published in 1838. It wasn’t only written in story, but also adapted to movie and
novel. We analyze how the author delivered social situation happened to himself in England
Revolution Industry era into the main character Oliver Twist through sociological approach.

The theory of sociological approach included social stratification, social class, social mobility,
culture, religion, secularization, law, and deviance. Based on the story we focused on the crime
issue, especially economic exploitation of children.

Charles Dickens adapted crime issue such children exploitation as dominant issue and poor
people’s life in the suburb area, where the villagers lost their job as farmer, it led them moved to
the city (urbanization). But, at the city, they got low salary and still poor. It caused crime, one of
them is children exploitation as happened with the main character of the story, Oliver Twist. He
was an orphan and poor child who faced the cruel life at that time. Begin with oppression
happened in the village until children exploitation in the city.

The main reason that become the background of Oliver Twist story is based on Charles
Dickens’s own story. At that time, he lived in the poverty with his family. So, they had to work
in the factory because of financial problem they had. Then, the depiction of the starving and
abuse children in the workhouse was the manifestation of Dickens’s hatred toward same thing he
felt at the past.

In conclusion, this short story tells about the struggle children who lived in an orphan named
Oliver Twist. The characters is explained clearly so that the delivery of the contents of the story
can be conveyed well. The illustration contained in this story also adequately describe what was
happening at that time. The moral value of this short story is “be a tough person and never give
up, so you can achieve your happiness”.
