BOOK REVIEW: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

I feel like I could give you a million reasons for wanting to read this gem
of a book. But, let me start by typing out a few.( I figure book lovers
shouldn't mind a little reading anyway)
First of all, Khaled Hosseini is the kind of writer who comes along once in a
lifetime. I can't find the words to describe his amazing writing but saying that it's
absolutely beautiful comes close. He spins magic with his words, creating worlds
after worlds that one can never get enough of.

"The Kite Runner" is the kind of book that will stay with you forever. You
wouldn't be able to put it down because the story it tells is not an ordinary one. I
am not going to discuss the plot here because ideally I want you to read it for
yourself. Instead, let me tell you about what makes it a special read.
You know how sometimes you feel like you don't get somebody or what they are
saying because you haven't been in their shoes? How things aren't making enough
sense? Hosseini makes you "get" every character. You will find yourself
commiserating, relating, rejoicing, grieving, celebrating and living - right along
with them. You will find yourself perfectly capable of understanding their pain,
their reservations, their turmoil, their actions, their every decision.

Oh and did I mention Hosseini writes just beautifully? I mean who can resist lines
like these -
“And that's the thing about people who mean everything they say. They think
everyone else does too.”
"I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany,
but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in
the middle of the night."

“It's wrong what they say about the past, I've learned, about how you can bury it.
Because the past claws its way out.”

“Life goes on, unmindful of beginning, end…crisis or catharsis, moving forward

like a slow, dusty caravan of kochis (nomads).”
“The problem, of course, was that [he] saw the world in black and white. And he
got to decide what was black and what was white. You can't love a person who
lives that way without fearing him too. Maybe even hating him a little.”

I could go on and on but I will let you get to the book first.

It takes a master-teller to spin a story this great. and when you pick up this book,
you will realize you've just met him. Fair warning, if you're anything like me - You
will become utterly obsessed with Afghanistan, its culture, its language, its people.
You won't be able to stop devouring this author's books one after another. You will
wish he came out with another novel soon. You will read his interviews, just to get
another piece of his brilliant mind. You will appreciate life from a perspective you
never knew existed. You will even watch the movie based on this book and be
dismayed that despite being a beautiful movie in its own right, it couldn't even
come close to touching the magic that is "The Kite Runner".
You will feel a deep sense of belonging when you read the words "For you, a
thousand times over". And you will wonder how it is that mere words can make
you feel something so profoundly great.
I am so utterly in love with all books Hosseini that I almost feel like I know him,
through his books. "The Kite Runner" will always be one of the books I hold dear
to my heart.
I actually read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" before I read "The Kite Runner"
and was instantly converted. Because that's what his words do to you - they
change you as a person, you actually experience growth after you're finished with
it.

And to anybody wondering, if "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is as good as "The

Kite Runner", let me quote one of the reviews on its cover page and say "that it's
better". Infinitely so.

I hope you enjoy the journey of discovering this book and the others by Khaled
Hosseini. Because Lord knows it's a journey you can't do without.
Happy reading! :)
