Best Color Manager is a software module that has been especially designed to let you create your own paper
and reference profiles with an easy-to-use user interface. It also enables you to linearize your printer to
ensure that you obtain consistent color-accurate results from your inkjet printer at all times. This document
provides information on when and how to use Best Color Manager.
Scope of delivery
Best Color Manager is installed automatically when you
upgrade your current Best Colorproof or Best Screenproof
software version 4.6.3 to Best Colorproof Premium or Best
Screenproof Premium.
Best Colorproof Premium and Best Screenproof Premium
consist of:
• Best Colorproof or Best Screenproof version 4.6.3
• Best Color Manager 1.0
Furthermore, the program upgrade is also available as Best
Colorproof Premium Suite or Best Screenproof Premium Suite.
This software package consists of:
• Best Colorproof or Best Screenproof version 4.6.3
• Best Color Manager 1.0
• Best Remoteproof version 2.0 (including the Best Eye
measuring device)
4. Click »Next«. A dialog box appears that asks you which Best
product you wish to update.
5. Select the Best product you wish to upgrade.
User interface
Dialog boxes
The dialog boxes for each tool are similarly constructed:
Best Color Manager is an easy-to-use software that leads you
step by step through each individual stage of the procedure.
The main program steps are listed on the left of the program
windows and appear in every dialog box for the particular
procedure.
The software will not allow you to proceed to the next dialog
box until you have successfully completed all the steps in the
current dialog box.
You may, however, return to previous dialog boxes to make
any necessary changes or to check your settings by clicking on
the appropriate button. However, in this case, you must repeat
all the subsequent steps in the procedure.
Advanced dialog boxes are available for some program steps.
The steps contained in these dialog boxes are not essential,
but are available for experienced users who wish to finetune
certain settings.
Detailed step-by-step instructions of the actions to be
performed in the current dialog box are described in the
Wizard located below the list of program steps.
Hyperlinks are integrated into the text. Click on these
hyperlinks to reveal additional information pertinent to the
current step.
Many dialog boxes contain a »Reset« button. Click on this
button to undo user changes and return to the default values
suggested by the software, if required.
Menus
File menu
This menu contains commands for loading or saving files
pertaining to the current program step. For example, you can
load a paper profile, a base linearization, the measurements
of an IT8 chart or a visual correction file.
The command »Save Profiling Job« lets you save each stage
of a procedure. Your profiling jobs are saved in the folder
»WorkingSpace« of your Best installation folder.
Via the command »Load Profiling Job« you can then reload a
previously saved file and continue with your profiling job.
Settings menu
This menu contains the command »Language«. It enables you
to change the language in which the user interface and
program messages are displayed.
Color management
This section is intended as a brief introduction to color
management. It explains why profiles and linearizations are
important and how they affect color output.
Color reproduction is device-dependent, i.e. if you output the
same file on two different devices, you will usually get two
different sets of colors. Even two printers of the same model
may show slight differences in their output.
Profiles
To obtain color-accurate printouts in accordance with the ICC
standard, your Best software uses two output profiles — a
paper profile and a reference profile.
• Paper profiles
The paper profile describes the color reproduction
properties of the printer model you are using, based on the
type of paper, the type of ink and the resolution settings on
your printer. If you change one of these attributes, you will
need to create a new profile.
A set of generic profiles for your printer is provided with
your Best software. You will find these paper profiles in the
appropriate subdirectory of the folder »ICCProfiles« of the
Best installation folder.
When you select a particular type of paper, resolution and
ink in the »Color management dataset« dialog box, your
Best software automatically chooses the appropriate paper
profile based on these settings.
• Reference profiles
The reference profile describes the color reproduction
properties of the printing machine you wish to simulate on
your inkjet printer.
A set of generic profiles is provided with your Best software
and installed in the subdirectory »Reference« of the Best
installation folder.
Linearizations
Types of linearization
There are two types of linearization: a base linearization and
a printer re-linearization.
• Base linearization
A base linearization forms the basis for the paper profile. It
contains details of the quantities of color, under which the
paper profile was created, i.e. the color values necessary to
achieve the maximum density of color while, at the same
time, using as little ink as possible.
The base linearization determines the physical
characteristics of how ink and paper work together and
optimizes these characteristics for profiling.
A base linearization is assigned (»patched«) to each paper
profile and is loaded automatically with the paper profile.
Printer re-linearization
A process to re-adjust the color densities and return the
printer to the original state used to generate the base
linearization.
Quantity of color
A process to define the maximum quantity of ink for
each ink channel and so prevent colors from becoming
oversaturated and »bleeding«.

40 density is achieved at approx. 50%, as illustrated in the

graph.
