Name Change in Zimbabwe

It is possible to change your names or surname. There are various reasons why people are seeking to
change their names. One of the most commons reasons I’ve come across so far is spiritual. Either the
person does not want to be tied to a surname which they think is jinxed or that they want a more
“Christian like” surname. I have seen Pastors who change their surnames to Gideon, Angel, Christian,
James, Joshua etc. Sometimes a person may just dislike their name or what it means hence they seek
to change it. Sometimes one would also want to change from their mothers surname and assume their
fathers name.

How does one change their name?

1. A lawyer or a notary public has to prepare change of name documents which make a
declaration that you have denounce your name and you are assuming another one.
2. The change of name is publicised in the newspaper and a proof of publication must be filled
together with the notarial deed prepared for change of name. Change of name is a public act
and if one is changing their name the public has an interest to know that a certain person is
changing their name.
3. Once the notarial deed is registered one can affect the changes on all official documents to
indicate the new name. Even your title deeds and certificates can be endorsed with your
new name.
4. The whole process usually takes about two weeks.
5. You cannot however change your birth certificate through this process.

Change of name by reregistration.

One can also change their surnames by reregistration in cases where they are reunited with the
father who was absent when they registered their birth certificates. What is needed is the consent
and cooperation of the biological father and they have to appear at the registrar general’s office and
fill in reregistration forms as well as depose to an affidavit.

What if you have a wife and children?

1. When the husband changes his surname the wife can present the deed to the registrar
General’s office and have hers changed too immediately.
2. As for the children they have to be incorporated to the father’s deed for change of name.

What are the costs?

1. For the advert in the Herald and government gazette one has to pay about Z$210.
2. For Notarial deed for change of name one pays $50 to the Registrar of Deeds.
