Synthesis

Well being could be understood as what people feel and how they function both on personal and

social level. (Mental Health foundation UK, 2015).

World Health Organization (2014) pointed out the importance of mental health on one’s state of

well-being in which aside from functioning productively, an individual could handle stress and

pressure properly thus capable of contributing for the good of the community he or she belongs

to.

Furthermore, studies done by Hovarth (2012), Turley and Wodtke (2010) and Sanchez (2012)

investigated the well-being of the students. Giving emphasis on how different living

environments affects their beings from academic performance to their health.

Due to this, personal and social aspects such as social support (Fernandez-Gonzales, et al 2015)

(King, Ding, & Zhao 2015) and personality traits (Diener & Lucas, 2018) were being considered

in relation to students well-being.

According to Fernandez-Gonzales, et al (2015) social support has favorable results in terms of

coping from stress and changes due to the proximity of its availability and the opportunity it can

give to the students. It also span different forms; may it be through emotional support or

instrumental (Kent de Gray, 2018)

Moreover, human characteristics were also being investigated since it can influence the people's

preferences of others, environment and satisfaction (Sanchez, 2012) that it could affect one’s

coping mechanism with stress (Hasfar et al, 2015)

Due to the aforementioned issues, the researchers decided to come up with a study with the

freshmen students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila both commuting and dorm residents of

the effects and association of personality traits and social support on the students well being.
