Blockchain in Carbon Trading and Carbon Footprint Measurement

Project Outline
Our project simply put would investigate on the need of Blockchain as a technology in both
Carbon Trading and measuring carbon footprints emitted by various industries.
Why do we need Blockchain in Carbon Trading?
In the present scenario, the entire world is divided by multiple carbon markets, many unlinked
and a few linked through complex processes. Each of the region has their own set of
regulation and specifications. Not having a unified platform can lead to inefficiencies in
transacting across markets. Carbon credits cannot be directly interchanged to trade from one
market to another leading to increased trading costs. Hence we would investigate in our
report whether Blockchain would be an effective solution in mitigating the above discussed
problems.
Why do we need Blockchain in carbon measuring?
The effect of greenhouse gas emissions across the globe is pushing countries as well as
companies to redesign their manufacturing processes and reduce their carbon footprint.
However, despite international agreements, there is a lack of global and standardized system
to measure carbon emission and track where it is generated across the supply chain. Without
such a system, sustainable strategies will have only a limited impact. Hence we would look in
to the possibilities of using Blockchain for measuring carbon, calculating carbon credit &
standardizing emissions.

Coverage
Within carbon trading we would limit our scope to integration of various carbon markets.
Geographical scope would be global. Coming to Carbon measuring, we would look at only the
applications in calculating carbon footprint, carbon credit & standardizing emissions.

 Access latest research studies on blockchain as a technology and application of
blockchain in carbon trading and carbon footprint measurement.
 Conversations with blockchain professionals.
