3304: Floor Plan

Floor Plan

When considering the layout there are many different factors to take into
account. There should be enough space for the students to move, enough space to
play, enough space for the students to work, and the ability to develop life skills.

A major factor to consider is seating. The availability and type of seating are
important for the students’ stress levels and cognitive abilities (Jenson, 2005). Another
factor when considering the seating arrangement of a classroom is the mobility and the
angle of the student tables. “Tilted desks provide a better angle for reading” (Jenson,
2005). This also adds flow to the room and breaks the strict structure layout.

Storage is also important. There should be enough storage in the classroom, so

the students do not feel cluttered and cramped. “Classroom walls do not need to look
like the walls in students’ homes… (classrooms) should be full and rich… but not
distractingly cluttered” (Jenson, 2005). Therefore, there should be things on display to a
certain extent. The students deserve a clean and space and to not be distracted while in
the classroom.

In my floor plan, I made sure to place the library and the centers on opposite
sides of the classroom (Henniger, 2018). The library will be used for a quiet center, this
is where they will be able to go to this area and independently read or as a cool-down
area (Henniger, 2018). Whereas the centers are meant for the students to play and
perform experience. I anticipate this station to be much louder and hands-on.

Lastly, it is important for teachers to have technology in the classroom. Not only
will the students be able to develop a life skill, like…” learning to differentiate reliable
from unreliable sources on the Internet, (and) maintaining proper online etiquette”
(Savvidis, 2019). It also allows the students to become familiar with technology, so they
are “successful in the future” (Savvidis, 2019).

While planning the classroom layout can be fun, a prepared teacher should
consider these factors for the benefit of the students’ success.
