7. Russian Bear
ln 1997 | went to a Russian circus in St. Petersburg and saw a very big and rather sad looking bear
perform as part of the show. Hence the title and a piece which has become one of my most performed
compositions, largely due to the fact that it was an exam piece in the UK for a while.
The melody is always in the bass, sometimes syncopated and played throughout with the right hand
thumb. The chords are initially played with two and then three fìngers leading to a final statement of the
tune where they are strummed. Take care not to confuse Gfs and Gqs!
There is a lot of very useful basic right and left hand technique here which is good to explore so look
carefully at all of the markings (rests, dynamics, spread chords, staccato, glissando, slurs and right hand
colour changes for example).
Gory's ExtraTiP:
"Vrsit St. Petersburg and then see o bear in the wild, moybe in the Russion Toigo (and not ot the circus)."
