The project report should comply with following requirements:
1. Project should be based on an existing technology of a chemical process with suggested
modification, if possible, for product quantity enhancement/high yields/quality enrichment/troubleshooting and/or making the process environmentally friendly/sustainable. 2. All plant design projects should be based on a chemical process. Plant design projects based on just unit operations shall not be accepted. 3. The report should have separate chapters for Introduction (Process Selection, Description of Process Flow Diagram, Hazards Identification (HAZID), Material balance, Energy balance, Design of equipment, Process control, Optimization, Cost estimation, Risk analysis studies, and Conclusions. 4. Introduction should clearly indicate background, objectives, scope and project summary. It should also entail why you have chosen this project. Literature survey should clearly identify all available processes, selection criteria, details of process selection, all process parameters, kinetics and thermodynamics of the process, and process flow diagram (PFD). Hazards associated with this project should be identified as well (HAZID). 5. Material balance should be applied in a logical state of manner choosing basis of the process very carefully. Special care should be taken while applying material balance with chemical reactions. In this regard, material balance will have to be based on the kinetics/kinetic data of the reaction. Simple material/mass balance over chemical reaction shall not be accepted. It is suggested to use MS excel and give screen shots. 6. Energy balance should be applied in a logical state of manner. It is highly emphasized that irrespective of number and type of equipment designed, Material and energy balance should be applied over all the equipment in the process flow diagram of the plant design project. 7. Equipment’s should be designed (mechanical design) using standard designing equations and methods. No shortcut such as designing a distillation column on the basis of relative volatility, although a viable option in some cases, shall not be accepted. Similarly, all reactors involved in the plant design project should be based on the kinetics of the process and not the space-time. Beside mechanical design of equipment’s, graduates will have to model and simulate the assigned parts of their PFD as well. 8. Students are expected to identify process variable, suggest instrumentation involved, suggest process control (feed forward, or feed backward etc.,) and a process instrumentation diagram (PID). Note that students are not expected to go into theoretical details. However, a strong justification of control mechanism chosen by the students should be provided. 9. Cost estimation should involve all the process equipment in the process flow diagram of plant. 10. Students are required to justify the selection of material of construction for any particular equipment. Providing basic composition and types of various materials is neither sufficient nor necessary. 11. Students are expected to conduct detailed risk assessment using an appropriate risk assessment tool such as HAZOP, ETA, FTA, FMEA etc. The risk assessment studies should also include trouble shooting. 12. Use of website as reference is not allowed. However, data can be used from the websites based on scientific data such as NIST or websites of departments of governments.
