Anna Karenina

'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy, is a Russian novel that follows the life of Anna Karenina
during the late 19th century. In this lesson, we will go over a brief summary and the
main characters of the novel.

Director
Joseph Wright is an English film director. His motion pictures include the romance film
Pride & Prejudice, the romantic war drama Atonement, the action thriller Hanna, his
adaptation of Anna Karenina, Peter Pan origin story Pan, and Darkest Hour, a political
drama set during World War II.

Main Characters
Anna Karenina- a very beautiful woman, wife of Alexey Karenin.

Alexey Karenin- Anna's deceived husband.

Sergei Alexeyitch Karenin (Seriozha)- Anna's son whom she is forced to leave for her
lover's sake.

Alexey Vronsky- Anna's lover, an honorable, rich and handsome.

Konstantin Levin- Autobiographical hero of novel.

Princess Katerina (Kitty)- The eighteen year old debutante who becomes Levin's wife.

Prince Stepan Oblonsky (Stiva)- Anna's brother.

Princess Darya Oblonsky (Dolly)- Stiva's long-suffering wife and Kitty's older sister.

Nicolai Levin- Levin's brother who dies of tuberculosis.

Sergei Ivanitch Koznyshev- Levin's elder half-brother who is a famous writer and
intellectual.
Synopsis
The novel opens with Dolly, discovering that her husband Stiva is having an affair. Anna
Karenina consoles Dolly and convinces her to stay with her husband. Kitty is proposed to by
Konstantin Levin. She turns him down because she is in love with Vronsky.
Vronsky shows no interest in Kitty. Upon meeting Anna, he falls in love with and courts her even
though she is already married. At a ball, Anna and Vronsky give each other so much attention that
Kitty realizes she will never be with him. Anna returns to St. Petersburg followed by Vronsky, while
Konstantin returns to his estate in the countryside heartbroken.
Kitty becomes ill and goes to a healing center. Kitty comes back to St. Petersburg feeling better and
more prepared to be a wife.
Anna and Vronsky consummate their relationship. Anna becomes pregnant with Vronsky's child and
tells her husband Karenin of the affair.
Konstantin Levin focuses on his farm and tries to find meaning in life without Kitty. He watches as his
brother falls deathly ill from tuberculosis.
Despite Anna being pregnant with his child, Vronsky refuses to commit himself to her. He struggles
to choose between his love for Anna and his career goals.
Levin and Kitty become engaged.
Anna becomes ill with fever and is on her deathbed when Karenin forgives her for the affair and says
that she can be with Vronsky.
Kitty and Levin are married and struggle with the reality of married life. Kitty becomes pregnant.
Dolly visits Anna. She realizes that Anna's life is cold compared to her life.
Upon realizing the relationship with Vronsky will not endure, Anna commits suicide.

Conclusion
The movie industry is a place of possibilities where dreams can be make into reality.
This is the story and point of Anna Karenina the contrast between the two ways of living.
Both Levin and Anna end up with the person whom they desire, Anna in an illegitimate
relationship, Levin in a legitimate one. Anna is destroyed by what she thought would
make her happy and bring her fulfillment. Levin grows as a man that finds faith in God.
Tolstoy’s great novel stands as a sentinel to us.
