ADVERB OF MANNERS

A word that describes the manner of an action is


called adverb of manner. It answers the question –
How is the action carried out?

Examples :
 well

He swims well.

He swam well despite being tired.

 quickly

He ran quickly.

The town grew quickly after 1997.

 softly

She spoke softly.

 loudly

James coughed loudly to attract her attention.


 beautiful

He plays the flute beautifully. (after the direct object)

 greedily

He ate the chocolate cake greedily. (after the direct object)

He greedily ate the chocolate cake.

 generously

He gave us the money generously.

He generously gave us the money.

 happily

The child ran happily towards his mother.

The child ran towards his mother happily.

 patiently

He waited patiently for his mother to arrive.

 hard

The rain fell hard during the storm.

 quietly

He quietly asked me to leave the house.
