THERMODYNAMICS

DEFINITION: A science in which the storage, the

transformation , and the transfer of energy are studied.

Energy: stored a internal energy, kinetic energy, potential

energy , and chemical energy.

Thermodynamic system: a definite quantity of matter most

often contained within some closed surface.

Surroundings: all matter external to a system.

Isolated system: no material crosses the boundary of the

system and the system does not exchange energy with the
surroundings.

Control volume: an arbitrary volume in which the mass of the

continuum remains constant.

Control surface: the surface that surrounds the control

volume.
