Objective: To correctly perform the task of hand washing.
Instructions: Following the principles taught in Chapter 8 of the textbook, demonstrate the task of hand washing.

Procedural Steps S or U Comments
1. Gathers appropriate equipment: soap, paper towels, trash
basket, and, if needed, an orange stick 2. Removes rings, if possible 3. Removes watch or pushes watch up over wrist. Also moves sleeves up over wrists 4. Turns on faucet with a dry paper towel. Adjusts water temperature. Stands so that clothing does not touch the sink. 5. Wets hands. Keeps fingertips pointed downward at all times so water runs off fingertips. 6. Applies adequate amount of soap (about 1 teaspoon) to hands. 7. Lathers soap over hands and wrists, between fingers and under rings. Interlaces fingers. Works lather over every part of hands and wrists. Cleans fingernails by rubbing them against the palm of the opposite hand to force soap under the nails. Washes hands for 15 to 20 seconds. 8. Uses an orange stick to clean under fingernails, if needed. 9. Rinses hands well with fingertips pointed downward so water runs off fingertips. Does not shake water from hands. 10. Dries hands and wrists thoroughly with clean paper towels. Discards each paper towel into the trash as it is used. 11. Turns off the faucets with a clean, dry paper towel. Discards the paper towel into the trash. 12. If needed, applies lotion to hands.
