Play It As It Lays
In chapter nine, Maria and Carter are at their house in Beverly Hills. Carter is sitting in
the living room when Maria asks him if he is planning to stay their. Carter replies to Maria by
telling her that all of his stuff is there and does not answer the question that she asked him. Maria
is confused by this and furthermore asks him if they are separated. Carter tells Maria that it’s her
decision if they are separated or not and it makes Maria question whose decision it really is for
them to be seperated. He continues to not give her any straightforward answers and Maria goes
on to question her life and the decisions that she will make in the future. Maria tells Carter that
she’s willing to try to make their relationship better but he isn’t convinced that that is what she
really wants. She repeats it again to him and also tells him that she doesn’t think that it is a good
idea. The conversation ended with Carter telling her again that it is her decision to make and him
leaving the living room to go upstairs. I feel like Maria genuinely wants Carter and hers
relationship to get better but she doesn’t think that it’s possible. She also thinks that if their
relationship were to get better, she can spend more time with their daughter Kate and not be
restricted with the time that she sees her. Maria seems distraught by the situation and her actions
