Silanol Groups of Silica (Si-OH) can react with leuco dye .

Therefore, special grades which have inert surface activities
have to be used for thermal papers.
Requirements for Silica

1. Having inert surface activities not to react with leuco dyes.

2. Enough porosity to prevent migration of the ink.

3. High purity not to cause corrosion of the printing heads.

4. Soft structure not to abrade the printing heads.

Sipernat 101M fullfills the requirements!
