​THE NEWBORN AND BABIES

1.Introduction :

By treating parents homeopathically 6 month to 1 year before conception, the children can be
spared many troubles,specially hereditary ones.You will see that the children will be more
healthy.

Even when one of the parents is apparently without complaintss,it is a good thing to give
constitutional treatment, and to check whether there are any constitutional changes after 6
month.

The treatment of the baby can start during the pregnancy by treating the mother correctly.
Before pprescribe a memedy,remember you are not treating mother alone, you are treating
mother and children at a time.

Before the age of 2, it is difficult to determine a constitutional remedy.You must see which
remedy is present in the baby when the little patient is in your consulting room.Only this remedy
should be prescribed. According to Dr. Herscu Paul,ND most common pediatric constitutional
remedy: calc. carb, lyco.,medo.,nat m, phos.,puls.,sulph.,tuber..His opinion is,only these 8
remedies make up the constitutional similimum for nearly 80% of an average general pediatric
practice.

International academy for classical homeopathy( IACH) advices- " Never give nosodes to
children routinely! " though some schools say to do so.

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GIVE MOTHERS REMEDY TO THE BABY.( e.g. a baby had
colic,no single indicated remedy helped,until the child gave the same remedy as the mother,and
then,everything was better immediately.

Neither forget that the first serious shock to every human being is the birth itself, so if you need

2.EXAMINATION OF THE BABY​:

You can get crucial information from the parents by asking them how the baby differs
from the previous or other babies.

Try to find characteristic information in babies by observing the following things:

A.The appearance: the expression, the eyes,the colour of the face.

B.The skin: perspiration, skin eruptions,dry or moist skin

C.The respiration: motion of the nostrils, the chest,Do you have rattling respiration?

D. The abdomen?

E.The stool: colour,odour,consistency,frequency.

F.Does the baby cry? When? when it is hungry? when it is covered too warmly, or in case of
otitis?

G.Does it make particular movement or convulsions?

H.What's its favourite position?

I.The urine:colour,odour?

J. How does it react to milk?

k. Sleepy or sleepless?
-sleepy after troubles during
the delivery: OPIUM
-sleepy after a cold: GELS.

L. Salivation.

REMEMBER THAT A WORM BLOODED BABY CAN CRY BECAUSE ITS ANXIOUS
MOTHER HAS PUT HIM IN A WARM ROOM,COVERED WITH 3 BLANKET!

3.PROBLEMS IN THE FIRST DAYS AFTER BIRTH:

● Icterus: if lasts longer than 3 days,give aconite 200 or 1M.if this doesn't help think chell.
and then nat s.( remember chamo,thyroidinum if symptoms corresponds.Chamo,nat s,
chell, acon frequently verified in clinic)
● Respiratory problems : first think of ACONITE
● Eye problems: produced by too much oxygen in incubator : first think of Aconite.
● Premature birth(incubator) : first think of aconite
● Convulsions after Delivery: first think of NAT-S
● Cerebral hematoma and convulsions : First think of Arnica
● convulsions that starts in the abdomen & extend to the hand: think of cicuta vir.
● In case of trauma of spine,back or neck & convulsions produced by it: think of
HYPERICUM

● Cerebral hematoma+ convulsions + sleepiness + snoring : think of Op.

● Neonatal jaundice (icterus)+ convulsions : think of nat s
● Staphylococcus infection on the skin: first think SULPH
● Trauma of the chest with difficult respiration : think of stannum met
● Profuse rattling in chest,with severe dyspnea : think of Ant tart
● In case of hypothermia : after the delivery during the first 3 days: think of Aconite. If, in
addition, the baby is blue in the face, think of Arsenic alb or Veretrum.
● Retention of urine in case of newborn ; first think of Aconite.
● Crying infants when they develop this propensity immediately after birth & continue to
cry: Syph.

4.PPROBLEMS AFTER THE BABY COMES HOME:

Colic pains in babies:

The baby usually cries at night.The crying is worse after being feed.This is mostly the case
during the first 3 months of life and then disappears spontaneously.
D/D:
CHAMOMILLA: Carried, desire to be.In most cases,CHAMO 30 will help. If there is an
amelioration and afterwards a relapse, you can give 200. If there is no amelioration, don't repeat
again,because you will get a proving.

​COLOCYNTH: ​This is the 2nd choice if Cham. doesn't help.Think of it when the baby is better
with the pressure of abdomen.

​ IOSCOREA VILLOSA: If the pains are worse bending double,by stooping or lying

down.They are ameliorated by sitting erect or bending backward.
[ ​Remember colocynth and Dioscorea both are FOLDING MOBILE SET, one folds
forward, and the later backward​ ]

​LYCOPODIUM:​If there is a lot of flatulence and colic pain worse between 4 to 8 pm

Think of it when the parents have liver or gall bladder problems.

​PODOPHYLLUM: ​The colic pain go together with diarrhea and noisy flatus.

​ ELLADONNA: ​When the epigastrium is hard,pains come suddenly, when the baby is better

Otitis in babies:
The main reason why babies cry continuously is otitis media.

The baby may have more pain when you touch the auricle or when you push the tragus.

D/D(DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS)
● In case of right sided otitis with red face and swollen glands on right side,you should give
BELL.
● In case of left sided otitis, the first remedy is GRAPH. and if this doesn't help: MERC-I-R.
● In case of otitis both lt and rt side together with green discharge from nose or difficult
breathing because of mucus : think of KALI- BI.
● Otitis on the right side with discharge from ear: MERC-I-F.
● Otitis with eruption behind the ear: GRAPH.
● Otitis on the left side and discharge from the ear that smells like rotten fish:GRAPH.
● Otitis on the right side with a cheesy or watery discharge : SILICEA
● Otitis after measles : PULS.
● Otitis with bloody purulent discharge : PHOS.
● Left and right sided otitis with salivation:MERC.
● Left & right sided otitis with very red uvula: APIS
● Otitis with very red face in a warm blooded baby: PULS.
● Otitis in a baby with a pale face and red lips : SULPH.

CONJUNCTIVITIS IN BABIES:

● In case of very red eyes think of Arg nit( eye, inflammation, conjunctiva,granular)
● in case of red eye with swelling of eyelids think of apis.
● Red eyes+ lachrymal discharge: think of Euphr
● In case of purulent discharge from eyes: think of sulph.
● In case of inflammation of the margins of the lids, think of CLEM.,STAPH.,and GRAPH.(
Eye inflammation, lids,margins)

Tonsillitis in babies:

● The first remedy is Bell.

● in case of Rt sided tonsillitis with a lot of salivation, you can think of MERC- I- F.
● in case of Lt sided tonsillitis with a lot of salivation, you can think of MERC- I -R
● In case of Lt sided otitis together with Lt sided tonsillitis, think of MERC- I -R. or Lach.
● In case of Rt sided otitis together with Rt sided tonsillitis, think of MERC-I-F.(D/D
LYCO.)
● In case of tonsillitis with lot of cervical glands swelling, & nasal obstruction, think of
BAR-M
● In case of Lt sided tonsillitis with fever and with photophobia,think of BROM.( D/D. Bell.)
