Mysore Compost Preparation

This compost variant is done using heap method. The following steps are to be involved during the
Mysore compost preparation:

1. Pile the shredded dry matter for about 6 inches.

2. Spread a handful of Rock dust (Boar well Dust) on the dry matter.
3. Pile the fresh cow dung over the rock dust for about 3 inches.
4. Spray adequate water over the dung to maintain required moisture.
5. Pile Green materials over the cow dung for about 6 inches.
6. Spray adequate water over the dung to maintain required moisture.
7. Spread a handful of Calcium Carbonate/ Sunna (CaCo3) over the Greens.

Repeat the layering as per the availability of Raw materials and cover the heap with Gunny
bags/Coconut leaves.

Other noted details:

 A minimum of 4 sets of layering has to be done.

 Shredded dry and greens are easily digestible and hence decompose quickly.
 Rock dust is used to increase the phosphorous content in the manure.
 Calcium Carbonate contains calcium and also increases the heat in the compost, helping
thrive favourable bacterial growth.
 Greens increase nitrogen in the compost.
 Dry matter increases carbon in the compost.
 Wood ash can be used to increase potassium in the compost.
 Dung shouldn’t come in contact with calcium carbonate as the reaction forms methane.
 Due to less air flow, the compost stinks when fully covered with gunny bags/Leaves. Hence,
partially cover the heap.
 Rock phosphate and bone powder (Cow) can be alternatives for rock dust.
